When AT&T sent me a letter . . .

. . . telling me I had to pay $4.50 a month for long distance service, even if I made NO long distance calls . . . I immediately canceled my service with AT&T.

The arrogance . . .

You could have canceled your long distance service with them and kept your land line. That's what I did. I play $5.75 a month for my At&T landline.

Nope . . . I had Verizon as my local calling provider, and AT&T as my long distance provider. AT&T sent a letter telling me that I had to pay so much per month ($4.50) just to have the capability to make long distance calls. I immediately canceled my long distance service.

Then, ironically, I called Verizon to cancel AT&T long distance with THEM (since they did the billing for AT&T) and they charged me $12.50 just to cancel long distance. I was pissed! I immediately canceled my Verizon land line.

And these companies that want to be paid for doing NOTHING wonder why people are canceling?

So you could have cancel your long distance service but you chose not to?

I understand being pissed at the pointless fee though. At&T charged a bogus $7 fee to cancel my long distance. It was worth it to me though as three months of saving the minimum four bucks makes up for it, and DSL is the ONLY broadband in my town.

Basically I'm paying 5.75 for reliable 911 access, which I want anyway. Wireless 911 really blows in my area and I have small children.

Yes, I canceled. I'm not paying $4.50 a month just in case I need to make a long distance phone call.

Vonage filled the Verizon/AT&T niche quite nicely . . . at about half the cost . . . and at least triple the services.

5.75, but what's the cost with taxes and unfees?

1 edit

There are $5.56 in total fees.

So....

$5.70 - Measured Rate Phone Service
+$24.95 - Internet Service (3MB)
+$0.55 - Fees/Taxes
+$4.39 - "Unfees"
------------------------------------------
= $35.59 - Total

With or without phone service I'd be paying the BS "unfees", since DSL is the only broadband in town, and if there was another choice I would still consider DSL, as the $11.26 basically gets me reliable 911 and a phone that works during power outages.

I did the same thing and went with Verizon. Then Verizon pulled the same stunt so I found a third party LD provider. LD in the US is 4.5 cents a minute, calls to Korea 4.5 cents a minute and no plan charges. Haven't looked back since.
