I agree 1st the news jerks pushed the "housing crash" until it happened- now they are pushing for a "recession". Never underestimate the power of the media. Back in the early '90s, in the height of the gun control movement shock (tabloid) journalism was becoming mainstream. In Miami people were polled if violent crime was up or down. Something like 99% said "up" even though crime was down.
It was believed public perception was caused by a recent format change at a local teevee station, showing the same grisly details of the worst violent crimes *anywhere* in the country. The public was exposed to the same crime 20-30 times a day, with each 15-second teaser ad.

One wonders what could happen if the news jerks were to get positive about our economy and way of life. They're just doing what pays the most. If positive stories attracted viewers, they'd do it. Instead, it's human nature to slow down and stare at auto accidents. Or, to watch the guy standing on the ledge, threatening to jump (instead of congregating to talk about the nice weather).
Capitalism at work. Unfortunately we all pay as people with a perverted view of reality express their opinions in polls (or ballots).
