Factor in the price of oil (which topped $100bbl last week), rising food prices, rising electricity prices and in general, rising costs of everything as a ripple effect from the rising oil prices, and I think that paints a pretty clear picture of why AT&T et al are seeing a slump in income. People just can't afford to pay their bills when most utilities of doubled in the past four years. Those that drive are pressed for the gas costs. Those that ride the train, well, NY just had a 33% increase in fares.
