she claimed that it is and they will be activating
it for me on 11/25 and she gave me a confirmation
number. I will post back if this really happens.

ddg4005 : The techs may not have finished upgrading the switches at your CO yet. Give them a little more time.

When the service was announced back in January I had to wait until May before I could order the service. Hopefully you'll be able to order it soon as well.

jasonreid25 : Almost two months after the upgrade and I'm still trying to correct the billing. I have called several times and have been told something different each time; I've also sent an email but have yet to receive a response.

The modem they sent is not worth $40 and I would be happy to send it back but I refuse to wait months for a credit. I'll just keep hounding them until they cave.

BTW: I am completely satisfied with the actual service, the upgraded speed is excellent and will suffice until FIOS is available to me.

As I said the connection is rock-solid and I am grateful for it, I just really hate dealing with their support staff (both technical and billing).

dhudson1984 : i think the might be finally upgrading our rt. i was on the way home from work this evening about 15 till 6 (it was partially dark too lol) and 3 vz trucks were at the rt. it appears they were doing some heavy work. they had a laptop hooked up doing something too. anyway, hopefully i'll be able to get more speed here soon. i'll wait about a month to call and find out.

Only difference is, they changed my loop length a few times for unknown reasons, so I'm just beyond 8k. 7.1 is offered to businesses here (well I know 1 that has it), but that act like I have 12 heads when I ask about residential. In spite of the fact that there have been press releases out, I was told it would be here months ago, and I got an email with a 7.1 offer a couple of weeks back.

Smith6612 : Verizon does offer faster speeds for those who are in range of them. In some areas, 7.1Mbps is available to residents, otherwise, you're paying for business speeds which can get expensive. Besides, Verizon isn't trying to milk the copper anymore. Sure they're trying to use their equipment to the fullest by offering faster speeds, but FiOS is probably going to be showing up there anyways.

flatline_ : Ok, the upgrade has indeed gone through. Modem arrived the day after the order, but it is just a 1 port 6100f Bridge Modem - pretty useless to me since I have my network set up via the 4 port Versalink 327w.

flatline_ : Ok, the service appears to have finally become available to me in Brooklyn. I ordered it last night via the superspeed page, and have a SRD of 10/31. They also shipped me a brand new modem via UPS with tracking! Will update here on Halloween if I actually get the upgrade. :)

jasonreid25 : I recently upgraded to Verizon's 7mb package. FIOS is not available in my area, and likely won't be for the foreseeable future. Cable co (Suddenlink) offers 12mb service, but my Verizon DSL is rock solid, cable in this area is too unreliable. I am happy with Verizon, the 7mb works fine for gaming, HD VOD (DirecTV), and general internet surfing. I would always welcome higher speeds, but reliability is more important to me.

bsgdude : Received 3rd upgrade letter in mail on Tuesday 10/7. Called in to try to upgrade again and this time was told "no problem service will be upgraded on Monday 10/13". Earlier calls I was told 7.1 was not available. Modem lost sync at approx 10am yesterday 10/9. After re-sync had 7.1 speed.

dataice : hang in there. I was recently upgraded to the 7.1 tier. You can read my review on how it all went down by clicking on my name. It was pure hell on earth, but finally after 2 weeks of speaking to at least 15 different reps and 7 supervisors it was fixed yesterday on the 22nd. I wish you good luck.

jasonreid25 : I'm glad your upgrade went smoothly. My upgrade was completed on 9/18 and since then I have not been able to connect. I have a solid DSL light but the modem will not go past "detecting WAN configuration". I have been told everything from someone wired it incorrectly to it was a software problem on VZ's end. So far I have spoken to at least 6 level 3 techs and nothing has been fixed. Now they are telling me maybe tomorrow. I'm almost ready to give up on DSL and switch to dreaded cable...

I am 7900 ft from the CO and I have a SIECOR SRP-202-253 POTS Splitter and using CAT5e for the home run from the splitter to the DSL modem, originally installed when 1.5Mbps DSL became available 3-4 years ago.

They said it does appear that it's available in consumer form in my area in their qualification tool. BUT, after looking into the ordering tool, it doesn't appear in that system as available. he is going to go look into it and call me back.

i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

at least the operators are trained now to know to look into this deeper.

Yes, it is true. If I recall your stats correctly, there is a very good chance that will happen. But if they are willing to actually give you the service, then go for it. Maybe you will luck out and just maintain a lower sync without the disconnects. Just don't get your hopes up.

jasonreid25 : I just got off the phone (after a 55 min call) with DSL tech support. The automated system advised me that the upgrade had been completed, the rep told me that it hasn't. She said she could see that it was scheduled for today (8/29) but doesn't know why it hasn't been completed. She ran a few line tests, then placed me on hold to check with another dept. She said they would call me sometime tomorrow, and that I need to call back Tuesday to have the modem re-provisioned? Shouldn't that happen when it is upgraded?

Smith6612 : Speed Upgrades can sometimes take two weeks to complete, so have patience. As for the modem, it should resync on it's own as soon as the speed is changed. But if it doesn't, power cycling it of course will show.

cmchavis : I received a letter a month ago and another recently. I didn't have dry-loop before and I saw they were offing that too. So Monday I called and put in the change order. Dry-loop and 7.1. The lady said 7.1 was available, put in the order for it and everything would be done Tuesday evening.

Tuesday - Nothing

Wednesday - no land line. The dry-loop part seems to be implemented but still at 3mbit dsl. I call for an order status and they tell me that there is no such thing as 7.1 and that I ordered 3mbit. I already had 3mbit - I watned 7.1

After about 2 hours on the phone talking to tech, billing, sales, back to tech back to billing and then finally to retention I ended up with Dry-loop 3 at $28 a month. Better than the $80 I was paying for local service and dsl.

I guess 7.1 isn't available in NW Indiana.

I called when I received the first one (about a month ago) and was told that I did not qualify, in fact the guy sounded surprised that I even received the letter. Today I called and it was no problem, she entered the upgrade request and even gave me a better price than what was printed on the letter.

pende_tim : I "ALMOST" got dry loop 7.1 DSL last week. I was ordering dry loop and the rep asked what speed I wanted. 7.1 with self install was on the list so I said OK. The monthly cost was ~$42.00, IIRC, so I said OK.

When she tried to place order, it wanted a $190. fee for tech visit and that could not be over ridden for some reason. She spoke to supervisor who said it is free install with a landline but $190 naked. Oh well, 3.0 DSL is better , in my opinion, than Time Warner Cable in Durham any day.

Smith6612 : Oh Well. If you check back every now and again, if FiOS isn't available you might see 7.1Mbps come around. They have to upgrade equipment in the DSLAM and in the CO for the 7.1Mbps for residents to become available.

That's not unheard of. The field tech said that my line would technically go up to 10m(if the technology was there) according to the device he was using to test my line. (I'm about 4600 ft away). However, the cards in my remote terminal haven't been upgraded to the 7m cards yet, so 3m is what I got (I got it through DSLExtreme, but its a Verizon resold line.)

guppy_fish : The modem has no provisioning, thats a cable modem thing, not a dsl modem. the speed is configured at the dslam in the central office. You will have to call and find out why 7.1 was not provisioned for your dslam port

Long story short: engineering says everything is in place; provisioning says the address is eligible; the press contact was told that the service was available. Nobody knows why I can't place an order. After more research, the engineering department admitted that nobody in the city was able to place an order for 7mbps. I know Verizon is a big company with complex systems that take time to update but it isn't acceptable for a press release to go out, have your engineering department do the heavy lifting, and then not make the service available.

Lame.

Moogs : They called and said they are still having trouble adding it to my bill (the $ difference). The lady said I would definately need a new modem that they would provide for free, my Westell Wirespeed Ethernet Modem is not compatible witht he higher speed.
She said she would keep trying and would call me back as soon as they got it fixed......needless to say I am still waiting and I am pretty sure I won't hear anymore from them today.
That number is the one on the flyer I received in the mail about "Club 7.1"

a333 : Technically, it SHOULDN't need a new modem, but they might be putting you on ADSL2+ to push those speeds out, hence the need for a newer ADSL2+-compatible modem.
But in any case, let them send it out, as a newer modem definitely doesn't hurt, especially if it's free.

I called back to get the order number but it wasn't available. The reason was that the ordering system is not set to handle the 7.1 service. The engineers are updating the ordering system so I can get my order number.

flatline_ : Well I was inspired by the recent posts here, and decided to take a gamble and call in. This time, I started with Sales, who told actually told me it is available to me and transferred me to billing to enter the change. Billing then confirms that it's available - I'm in shock. Great news, right? WRONG! The guy comes back on the line and tells me that the system is showing it as available, but it is not allowing him to enter the order.

All in all, I wasted yet another 20 minutes on the phone with them today. To their credit, the reps were all very courteous and knew what I was asking for. For whatever reason, though, the system just does not want me to get it. :)

AMDUSER : Try contacting Verizon's Customer Advocacy Group at 1-800-483-7988.

Tell them you want to order the 7.1 meg, except billing will not allow you to.
Ask them to test the line, to check if it qualifies.

At 6,700 feet, it should easily qualify for it.

flatline_ : Let us know what comes of your call, Network Guy. I've had it with wasting my time on the telephone with them. The My Account page says "faster speed is available in your area..." (I'm in Brooklyn, NY) however when redirected to the superspeed17 page, I still see no options to change my plan. Distance could not be a factor, as I am at 6,700 feet.

Since FiOS will likely not reach this area until 2015, I've decided to give them until October-November to get this 7.1 speed to us. If it's still a no-go by the fall, Optimum Triple Play here I come! :)

Actually my zip is 10453. It's been that since I moved into my building 20 years ago. I'm on Morris Avenue between Bunrside and Tremont north and south and Jerome and the Concourse west and east.

ddg4005 : My speed was upgraded to the faster service today. Two technicians were involved: the first installed a second jack and connected it to my main jack and the other tech tested the line.

The entire process installation took a little over an hour and I had to reboot my DSL gateway. My new speed tests at 6.5 down and 690-728 up (depending on which server I test from). I'm downloading at 790KB/s; not quite as fast cable but fast enough for now :D.

Correct. Upgrades (even to FIOS) do not result in an ETF. You'll just start a new contract with the new speeds.

Gen3tix : Called twice. First time, some lady kept telling me that 7.1mbps is FiOS only, so I gave up. Tried again a few minutes later, and got someone on the other line who at least knew what he was talking about.

Funny thing is, he used to live in the same town as me, less than like...4 minutes from my house. So I thought that was neat. But anyways, he said 7.1 was just being rolled out for residential services, and it's not available by me yet.

The faster service won't be ready until this Friday. So far, aside from losing phone service last week for a day or two, everything looks to be on track. I've even run the 100 ft line down my hallway to the back of my apartment just make the final hookup seamless.

Thanks. Everything should go fine; I'm confident I'll be up and running in no time next Friday. The big question is when will the rest of the Bronx see Fios deployment? Judging from the Turbo plan being made available to current DSL customers I'd say not anytime soon.

ddg4005 : I called them today and was able to place an order for the faster service on my main line. My account will be transferred from my second line and the technician is scheduled for the 23rd of this month to do whatever he needs to do to my phone box.

It's not what I wanted but at least I can get the faster speed. My suspicion is that my second line cannot be upgraded since it does not originate from the box at the back of my building. That's the only reason I can think off right now.

ddg4005 : Now Verizon's page says I can order the service for my main line. It's been displaying that tier on and off for a month now.

Tomorrow I'll call them and see if I can order it. They can transfer my current DSL service from my second line to the main one and then upgrade it to 7.1.

DSL service in general depends on the particular connection. The 7mb speed in particular depends greatly on loop length and condition. From what ddg4005 said, it's possible he is in an area that has it available but there is a problem with his particular line.

zufman : Maybe they figured out from all the talk about it that they shouldn't have it up as an option when they couldn't deliver it. I could be a bit paranoid but it reminds me of a bait and switch tactic. People see the 7.1 and when they call, verizon tries to talk them into a fios package.

I've noticed that ever since Friday night, it no longer shows ANY plans at all for my dsl account. Previously, I'd be given the option to click 7.1/768 (recently appeared, although the order would fail every time) or renew my 3.0/768 plan for another 2 years. Hopefully they're performing an update? Fingers crossed!

Smith6612 : Well, it has to be true a little bit because they aren't shutting off the people's copper service, are they? If Verizon wanted people on Fiber, they would seriously force them onto the Fiber. As for the FiOS, of course it's going to be more expensive than DSL, as it gives more upload and the equipment and cabling is expensive, along with the labor to install it which I'm sure you're aware of.

zufman : 7.1 Mbps dsl is $39.99 if you can get it. 5/2 Mbps Fios is $42.99 around here and they have a 15/2 Mbps for $52.99. Granted, that's not a ton of money but it is more. I also am leary about the installation of Fios. I'm not alone here and I don't want the people I rent to to be forced into Fiber. They say you can keep the copper wire but I don't trust that to be true.

Billing said there was no 7.1 speed and tried to get me into a fios connection. I tried another number and was told it was not available but I could get fios. They gave me a number for my local office. I called that number and got a women with a heavy accent. Just a guess but possibly from India. I had trouble understanding her but she also said not available. Get Fios.
Don't want Fios yet. It's more money. I guess I'll go month to month for a while and see what happens.

I didn't try to order it online because I am on a special pricing package with Verizon for my telephone and DSL (called a "Double Freedom Bundle" I think).

I called the local Verizon office and they confirmed my loop length of 7900 feet qualified my line for the 7.1 service but their computer was not showing it as an option for my line. The CSR is submitting a discrepancy form and will get back to me in 1-2 days. The bottom line is that either the online DSL order form is incorrect or the local Verizon office is incorrect. It seems like one hand at Verizon doesn't know what the other hand is doing!

The guy was very polite and pretty knowledgeable though, told me it's NOT due to my distance from the CO: confirmed that I'm only at 6,000 feet. I guess the waiting continues! LOL. Will also keep trying the superspeed17 page, hopefully one day the order will go through :D

I asked if I could speak to someone with a clue -- someone with with more than a database of addresses. I was transferred to who knows where and heard a nice recording that if I was calling to establish new service (which I am) that that number cannot assist me. Whee!

The press release is quite clear about where in DC has 7mbit available and my address has a loop length of about 3,500 feet from one of the central offices that allegedly has 7mbit.

Disappointing. What's more disappointing is having no way to talk to someone with a clue. I used the Verizon website to send an email and never got a response. When I did the same with Comcast (not known for customer service) I got a call back from a very knowledgeable person with the information I wanted (release date for HD channels).

samis : thanks to everyone who posted advice! After about a week or so of dealing with problems(Verizon screws it up again), i finally have working internet. Tech guy did a bunch of work on my line and it seems they had to install another jack because for whatever reason, something was screwing up my line.

flatline_ : I called back today out of curiosity, since it had been about a month or more since I last called in. Told the same thing - despite press releases, the fastest speed available in my area (NYC) is 3.0. Hopefully they can get it to my area this summer, because I'm planning to changeover to Optimum Online this fall. I'd love to keep my dsl line. However, the 3.0 downstream is pretty sparse in comparison with what others are currently offering!

mikepd : 80% or more of rated line speed is considered good due to TCP and other overhead such as PPPoE if you are using that protocol.

a333 : wait, do you mean you had a filter on the line between the modem and the jack? If so, you sure did the right thing by removing it. Also, check that the PHONE, NOT the modem, has a filter on it. Filters go on ALL non-DSL devices on your line (i.e. anything other than the DSL modem)
