| Network Solutions holding domains hostage?
I searched around on DSLR for anything about this, but I haven't found it. I can't believe it hasn't hit here yet. It seems Network Solutions is putting a hold on searched domain names, and upping the price for that name for several days after it is searched.

OK, but it still says it is available (even though it shows it is not registered).. I am not sure what the gripe is? Is it the fact that snipers can somehow see what people are regging and grab it?

Is now up with their splash page.. I mean, you could put in a domain name like: netsolrapeslittlekids.com and in a minute, they have a site up for it..
From a business standpoint this is kinda stupid.. Example, look at what I just tried, and worked:

Now, Netsol has just allowed users to tag arbitrary data to their name, in a sense..

So I tried this myself with bbrtesttesttestdaddy.com.
I searched for it at GoDaddy. Said it was available and I could register it.
I searched for it at Network Solutions and got the same response.
I searched again at GoDaddy and it was "Unavailable" with no WHOIS information available (no response from the WHOIS server to GoDaddy's request).
All of this within 60 seconds.
I think it's two problems. 1) NetSol is locking up domains based on a search, not a purchase while other registrars are not doing that. 2) Front-Runners will be able to monitor for those types of holds and then squat on them.
Imagine if just searching the real estate ads kept anyone from buying a listed house for 5 days. Doesn't make much sense, does it. Sounds and smells like pure greed.
EDIT: Now visit »bbrtesttesttestdaddy.com and you won't even get a 404 anymore. You truly get a hijacked lookup.

LOL, now when you go to godaddy and do a whois on the domain I just searched, you get:
DONTREGISTERDOMAINSHERE.COM is already taken.
Now, is it just me, or is this an opening for an attack? Could not a bot army just swarm Netsols whois with requests, and slowly close all available names to Godaddy?
Umm, something isn't right here..

Another more obvious problem is that you will now not be able to register the domain through a different registrar. Let's say a person wants to get a domain name and they head to NetSol because they've heard of them before. They search for their domain, find that it is available, then go through that horrific checkout process where NetSol tries to sell them every service they can cram on a web page. Finally the end is reached and the potential purchaser sees NetSol wants $35. Heck with that, they think. They'll find another registrar that charges single digit prices per year. Only now they can't register it because despite what NetSol's tools say, the domain really is no longer available. NetSol is holding it and it only can only be registered through them. |

Yeah, I haven't seen them jack the price if it is searched, but I do see they put a hold on the domain.
There should be no hold on a domain unless it gets added to a basket, and then it should only be until the basket times out..

I added the emphasis. If "a" customer, not the same one.
So in other words, he is admitting that they're sitting on these domains for 4 days to the exclusion of every other registrar. This benefits customers in NO WAY at all. If it was limited to the original customer who made the search, then maybe it could be justified a tiny bit. But this just limits where the customer can register the domain.
He further states: quote:
You are correct that we are trying to take an arrow out of the quiver of the tasters. As you know, domain tasters are the largest Front Runners. [...] Some folks may not agree with our approach, but we are trying to prevent this malicious activity from impacting our customers.
Um yeah, so we're trying to stop others form doing this ... by doing it ourselves?
Network Solutions started sucking years ago, and they're expensive for no good reason. I do occasionally use their search service, but no more. This behavior is bad enough. The half-assed explanation is even worse. |

Geez, I didn't know this had gotten this bad:
"In April 2006, out of 35 million registrations, only a little more than 2 million were permanent or actually purchased. By February 2007, the CEO of GoDaddy reported that of 55.1 million domain names registered, 51.5 million were canceled and refunded just before the 5 day grace period expired and only 3.6 million domain names were actually kept.

Used to be it took them awhile to reserve a domain, Apparently now they do within a few minutes. Dotster was strongly linked with this in the past, but there where suggestions that it just took advantage of the way NetSol was doing things. Looking at this now, it's evolved to the point that they reserve domains in a few minutes, something is seriously wrong with that. If NetSol really wanted to stop this they'd plug that loophole. ICANN should also eliminate the grace period, as it's obviously being severely abused. |
