I don't see the appeal to drinking the Apple Kool-aid myself, but to each their own |

So, right before the spectrum auction... |

| Interesting that it would take so long for Rogers to get a deal. Rogers is the type of company who seeks out such partnerships because it doesn't want its own brand to be so prominent.
Remember that Apple gets a big chunk of the monthly revenu generated from iphone customers, so Rogers may not be willing to part with that much money every month.
And there is also the question of whether Fido will be able to sell the iphone too.
Remember that in the grand scheme of things, Rogers is small potatoes. Indian networks activate more new customers in one month than Rogers has in its installed base.
Rogers would also need to decide what features to cripple in the Iphone since Rogers'crippling policies may be different from AT&T's. And Apple may be reluctant to allow Rogers to cripple phones more than AT&T cripples them. (remember that locking phones isn't the only thing networks do, they also customoze software/menus to remove/add options. |

Rogers has a GSM monopoly here.

Quake110Premium join:2003-12-20 Ottawa, ON | reply to macedon My take: Canada won't have the iPhone unless there was another GSM provider in Canada. Rogers isn't losing anything since Telus or Bell can't bring in the iPhone. Fido won't because it's a Rogers company.
So we'll have to wait for Vidéotron to get into the GSM business. |

Wrong, the iPhone IS coming and i'll tell you now it is Rogers, it just took a bit of negotiation. |

| reply to macedon The iPhone will be released 3 weeks before the spectrum auction in May...my best guess to lock customers into 3 year contracts.
Although it's going to take about 1-2 years for the new companies to be able to fully function. -- BCE and it's subsidiaries, Bell Canada, Bell Mobility, Bell ExpressVu, and Bell Sympatico are in no way responsible for my posts made in this forum. |

Rogers wouldn't be able to announce it would offer the 3G version of the Iphone until Apple lets the cat out of the bag (this tuesday ?)
It wouldn't be smart for Rogers to start to carry the old version when everyone knows Apple is to start to offer a 3G version.
Of course, this will be an interesting challenge for Apple:
For 2.5G:
850, 900, 1800 1900mhz.
For 3G: 2100 in the world. 850-1900 for canada/USA.
So to add 3G, they'll have to add 3 new "frequencies". |

In any case, the timeline is perfect for Q1 of this year. It appears that Comwave has ammended their trademark use of the iPhone and Apple has officially filed their trademark in the Canadian Trade-mark database. |

yeah that talk of Telus going GSM is interesting.
Should make for some interesting price changes and you will see Rogers get the Iphone damn fast if it becomes true that Telus is going GSM. |

1 edit | reply to macedon Here's the deal with the iphone,
Rogers is going to release the Iphone. What they are doing though is waiting for the 3G version of the Iphone. I have heard rumors that they might have it testing...
They decided not to release it on the current generation EDGE network...As holding off would / will give you the customer a better user experiance not to mention much better bang for your buck when the data plans get re-done again for the 3G Network. If they roll out the plans I am hearing in the rumor mill it will be well worth the wait... 1 gig for $65 is going to look like a rip off...
It's just a matter of time...
-- common sense isn't so common....is it? |
