| Re: iphone - will be here? Interesting that it would take so long for Rogers to get a deal. Rogers is the type of company who seeks out such partnerships because it doesn't want its own brand to be so prominent.
Remember that Apple gets a big chunk of the monthly revenu generated from iphone customers, so Rogers may not be willing to part with that much money every month.
And there is also the question of whether Fido will be able to sell the iphone too.
Remember that in the grand scheme of things, Rogers is small potatoes. Indian networks activate more new customers in one month than Rogers has in its installed base.
Rogers would also need to decide what features to cripple in the Iphone since Rogers'crippling policies may be different from AT&T's. And Apple may be reluctant to allow Rogers to cripple phones more than AT&T cripples them. (remember that locking phones isn't the only thing networks do, they also customoze software/menus to remove/add options.

| As long as Apple isn't willing to budge, unlikely.
Rogers has a GSM monopoly here.

| My take: Canada won't have the iPhone unless there was another GSM provider in Canada. Rogers isn't losing anything since Telus or Bell can't bring in the iPhone. Fido won't because it's a Rogers company.
So we'll have to wait for Vidéotron to get into the GSM business.

Rogers wouldn't be able to announce it would offer the 3G version of the Iphone until Apple lets the cat out of the bag (this tuesday ?)
It wouldn't be smart for Rogers to start to carry the old version when everyone knows Apple is to start to offer a 3G version.
Of course, this will be an interesting challenge for Apple:
For 2.5G:
850, 900, 1800 1900mhz.
For 3G: 2100 in the world. 850-1900 for canada/USA.
So to add 3G, they'll have to add 3 new "frequencies".

| The iPhone will be released 3 weeks before the spectrum auction in May...my best guess to lock customers into 3 year contracts.
Although it's going to take about 1-2 years for the new companies to be able to fully function. -- BCE and it's subsidiaries, Bell Canada, Bell Mobility, Bell ExpressVu, and Bell Sympatico are in no way responsible for my posts made in this forum.

In any case, the timeline is perfect for Q1 of this year. It appears that Comwave has ammended their trademark use of the iPhone and Apple has officially filed their trademark in the Canadian Trade-mark database.

yeah that talk of Telus going GSM is interesting.
Should make for some interesting price changes and you will see Rogers get the Iphone damn fast if it becomes true that Telus is going GSM.

Telus and Bell have both Talked about this more times than I can count from 1 - 100 while walking from Calgary to Toronto... Every time they have talked about it they have decided against it for multiple reason...One being cost... And besides the fact it would take them a long time (at least a year) before they got the conversion (up and running) forget completed. Rogers will fore-sure have the Iphone rolled out way before than.... Any way you cut the time line... And Jayman as far I new you work for company who Rogers contracts with to "in source" the call centers... Your not a direct Rogers employee.... Please correct me if I am wrong... My Rogers employee numbers says I belong to them. I have a @rci.rogers.com email. so I must belong to them

| I bet Telus and Bell will setup a roaming-only network for BC for 2010.
Why would Telus/Bell switch to GSM when they can wait and save money.
They will have to go backwards and deploy a 2G network and then release a 3G network then move a 4G network.
CDMA/EVDO --> GSM/HSDPA --> LTE
CDMA/EVDO --> LTE
Which path seems cheaper?
"Researchers at Nokia Siemens Networks and Heinrich Hertz Institute have demonstrated LTE with 100 Mbit/s Uplink transfer speeds."

| You can have an iPhone on Rogers or Fido, if its unlocked.
For those who read threads on howardforums, there's one quoting an article from TheStar mentionning TELUS is thinking implementing a GSM network in big center to gain market share of the roaming user pie currently eaten completely by the glutton that is Rogers.
Telus does have good price on data (15$ unlimited). One can only speculate when and IF it'll ever happen.
