They used to allow you to do it at whim and prorated the charge. You could sign up for HBO to watch one show or movie you liked then cancel it afterwards and you'd only get charged for 1 day of service which came out to $0.50 or so. Upon seeing that commercial, I changed the channel to 340 and got the standard "you are not subscribed" error message.
