If I was one of the people that switched services to get an iPhone and they now pull this, I would be a bit pissed off. -- "A religious war is like children fighting over who has the strongest imaginary friend."

| reply to tmc8080 While I have not done any major research, I have noticed that the iphone plan is not included in the rate changes. That said, my wifes iphone uses the std media net unlimited with text messages, since I "activated" the iphone through other means as to not lose the 20% corp discount we get (I have a TILT). Her iphone is not sim unlocked though, atleast not yet.
As for the rate changes, I use my phone alot, literally about 3 or so hours a day on data (during my metro/subway ride in the morning and evening), and I have yet to even come close to 5g. Granted, the last time I used it as a data device for my laptop was when I was heading to FL, at the airport, and I doubt I even came close. I do not download music and stuff like that though, I use it mostly for ssh and general surfing. We are both power users when using our phones, so the only loss we will be annoyed about is the loss of text messages.
Then again, neither of us are happy with the service, and may use this as an out without the ETF if possible. If only tmobile had a 3g network.. *sigh* |

Actually, Apple gets the full price on each one sold (whether it's sold at Apple store or AT&T store), which is $400 for 8 GB one or $300 for 4 GB one, plus $18 kickback from AT&T for every account that has iPhone activated on it. Multiply $18 by 24 (2 year contract), and you'll see that Apple is making a hefty amount from iPhones. Now, you can pick up an iPhone from one of the mom-and-pop shops that resell AT&T for less, but you are looking at much higher ETF in case you want to jump ship before your contract is up versus paying full retail price for iPhone and dealing with AT&T directly. --

| reply to ptrowski Given that the iPhone is EDGE-only, of course, and is thus not capable of much more than dialup speeds, AND cannot be tethered to a laptop, it's pretty hard to see how it could either get close to 5 GB per month OR how ATTM could justify charging increased data rates for it. Of course, if/when the rumored HSDPA-capable iPhone is released this spring this will change. |

| reply to PhoenixDown said by PhoenixDown :Do you think AT&T is doing this to spite Apple? Maybe it's a way for AT&T to allow iPhone users out of their contract to buy next gen phones where Apple doesn't get a cut? Not a smart move. If you were AT&T and you let someone out of a contract, where is the guarantee that they will buy their next generation phone from you? Once you let them walk, there's a good chance that they will go somewhere else.
I think AT&T will let the customers who have the current EDGE iPhones activated with them now to keep whatever plans they currently have. Doing otherwise will open a Pandora's box, and whatever comes out of it will bite both AT&T and Apple. Even if AT&T lets customers who were promised unlimited but can no longer get it out of their contracts, they will also demand a refund from Apple since iPhones cannot be legally used with other carriers without voiding warranty. Of course, if the above was to happen, Apple could try to prevent a sh*t storm by officially unlocking all iPhones, so whoever has them can go to another GSM carrier. But honestly, I think AT&T will let their EDGE iPhone customers keep their plans (at least as for the duration of their contracts).
It would, however, be interesting to see what data plans AT&T will be offering for the 3G-capable iPhones once they come out. If they do indeed do away with unlimited, then those who upgrading their EDGE iPhones to 3G ones will definitely be forced into a new contract during activation and will probably not be able to grandfather their unlimited data plan towards their new phone. -- Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies...
