| Just freaking great.... I just jumped and got a Blackberry with AT&T as they were practically giving them away. The manager at the store was doing early upgrades like they were going out of style. Now I know why...... | |

shanerPremium join:2000-10-04 Calgary, AB | To be fair, 5GB on a Blackberry is an absolute obscene amount of traffic. I'm considered to be a very high user, and I come in at 30 - 40 MB/month.
This move directly relates to 'tethered' data, not on device data. I have yet to see any device do 5 Gigs of on device usage in a month. And frankly, if anybody thinks their iPhone with the pathtic speeds of EDGE is going to remotely hit that cap ... Well, let's just say it won't.
They're doing this not necessarily because the bandwidth costs so much, but mostly because these users who use a ton of mobile data negatively affect the performance of the network. Ever get a 'fast busy' on AT@T? Now you know one reason why that might be happening. -- I'm laying pipe, all night long, laying pipe, to satisfy that woman.

The attachment isn't downloaded until you choose to download it; in other words, an email with an attachment is the same size as any other email until you open the attachment. And since the Blackberry allows you 'view only' mode, leave attachments for your PC to open.

I have three emails addresses, two work and one personal, tied to the Blackberry and am constantly getting resumes, spreadsheets etc sent. I think you'll be fine with them, especially on the Blackberry. It is when you "tether" or use an air card to supplant your home Internet connection that uses gigagobs (hey I am going to coin that phrase going forward)of data. Right now my company supplies me with a Sprint Card and I am sitting in a Starbucks doing work (ok my boss is is a different state) and for the past hour I have been just surfing the net and the data counter says that I have used (sent and received) 5 megs of data so far. 1 text message uses 1kb when you send it (really, really small). OH and if you stream, you use "gigagobs".....

Just make sure they will not penalize you for accessing "forbidden territory" without a plan. You might get hit (I say this with no knowledge of the particular plan you are on)with one of those iPhone kind of $18,000 data usage bills so proceed with caution for what is called casual use. Just dial 611 (free call) from the Blackberry and ask customer service outright. They will tell you the cost for casual tethering. Some companies will even block casual use for fraud purposes. I think Verizon does.

| Re: Just freaking great.... What you need to find out is, out of the plans listed below - which is yours and what is the cost for casual tethering. See some of them mention tethering and some mention none. I'd call 611 and ask them just in case. Don't take the word of anyone here (including me)....lol

I use 5 email accounts on my Blackberry virtually 24 hours a day- with attachments, etc.- and also never come anywhere near 1 GB, let alone 5GB.
I also believe this is to discourage tethering. -- No good deed goes unpunished.
