Thanks.
But before installation, do we need to remove the old version of JRE?
Im confused..How come I see JRE Update 3 and 4?? WHich ones do I need to remove in order to keep ONLY this new update?? |

Edit: Oh and thanks SUMware |

Bubba17Less is MorePremium join:2006-09-21 | reply to SUMware Well, before this slips to forgot again, as I've intended inquiring about it before, I've a question about these Java updates.
Upon each new update, having deleted/uninstalled the prior version and used registry tools to clean-up what is always left behind, I'm presented multiple connection questions by my firewall, asking if I'll allow connection.
The file jusched.exe, which I believe is "java update scheduler", or some such, asks for both inbound/outbound UDP and TCP connections to IP address' 66.82.4.8 and 12.37.74.33 ... I'm allowing these connections.
We trust Sun Microsystems .. don't we? |

On the internet I personally trust absolute no website, vendor, etc., far to many times I have witness the "good" turn "ugly".
As for the Update feature you mentioned. You may also notice that it is in Start-up. Again, personally I un-check it in Start-up and Block it at the Firewall. Bear in mind that it best to un-install a previous version of Java before install a new version. |

Would also suggest that you NEVER allow ANY in-bound connection to your PC. |

Sun releases Java SE 6 Update 4
Sun has released update 4 for Java SE 6, which fixes some 370 bugs including several security issues. Although Sun usually delays publishing details of vulnerabilities for a few months, the changelog for the update mentions a stack overflow in the sun.font.TrueTypeFont.getTableBuffer class.

I appreciate your reply.
Though Sun is probably trustworthy and doing nothing nefarious (the connections are to allow for automatic update checking), I've decided to remove the connection allowance, to not allow Java "update" to run at startup.
I'll get my Java update "alerts" here.

By removing the connection allowance(s), I mean from my firewall, in KIS7. Upon Java install, it triggered KIS twice for connection privileges, both UDP and TCP, to two addresses .. which I allowed rather than denied.
As for control of Java's updater running at startup, I'm using WinPatrol Plus. Great program, which enables numerous capabilities, including managing startup programs. In the startup realm, it also allows for timed (delaying) program(s) during startup - allowing resource balancing.
There is a free and Plus (paid) version.

| reply to Bubba17 said by Bubba17:. . I'll get my Java update "alerts" here. A wise policy, imo. There are unsubstantiated claims that the updater actually works now-- whether or not that's true I have no idea.
I thought about maybe waiting, but went ahead and installed this update. No problems, but a couple of notes--
I was given no option for a 'custom install', as I believe I've always been given in the past-- the 'additional language support' option, e.g., could always be unchecked. This time, it just installed without options (and is about 30MB larger on my machine than the previous install).
My firewall alerted me during install to a connection request to 'jmetrics' or some such thing, which I denied (a different request to strictly 'sun-java' I allowed). That 'jmetrics' is their data-collection arm. The install proceeded smoothly and without issue, though (once the installer got through pouting about the disallowed connection).
I give Sun-Java high marks for the way their uninstaller has improved. This is maybe the third time in a row that uninstalling the previous version has left no traces behind. YMMV of course, but that's been my experience, so good for them.
Also, another 'new feature' is that I wasn't allowed to download the update without first allowing a cookie-- something that was never required before. Lovely. And bush-league, imo. |
