3 edits | [Thunderbird] Uses LOTS of disk space - can't clean up I'm running out of space on my drive. I used diskdata to see what's using space. Thunderbird was using 1.1 GB.
So I went into Tbird and deleted lots of mail in several inboxes. Then I deleted the emails from trash. No change. I restarted Tbird - no change. Rebooted.
The amount of disk space used by Tbird went up to 1.4 GB and there is less free space on the HD.
When I go into diskdata to see the files and folders that tbird has taking up space, the inboxes and trash folders are still there and large on the disk, even though in the tbird application the inboxes and trash folders appear to be empty.
This despite deleting maybe 15,000 emails.
What can I do to get tbird to give me my HD back? -- YOU can help reduce poverty, sustainably. »www.kiva.org/lender/kenandart

rick752Premium join:2006-01-27 New York 4 edits | reply to koam In Tbird you can go to:
TOOLS ... OPTIONS ... ADVANCED .... "Network & Disk Space" .... "Disk Space.
"Compact folders when it will save over [value] KB"
I use a value of "1000" (1 meg"). It will automatically compact the mail file after that amount of unused 'white space' is detected within in.
Many people do not realize that almost all email clients contain only one file for each mail folder (Inbox, Sent, etc). All email messages are in that one file. When a message is deleted, it is removed from the file ... but all of the white space there remains (this can be seen with Notepad). This keeps the file at the same size even after hundreds of messages are removed. Any new message will not re-use that white space, so the file keeps growing larger and larger even though you may only have a few messages left in your Inbox. That's why the file needs to be compacted after a while. I'm really surprised that Tbird does not set the 'auto-compactor' by default. -- EasyList, EasyElement, & ABP Tracking Filter Subscriptions for Adblock Plus |

After 4 months of struggling to get Thunderbird to work with Vista, with it's Stalling & Freezing (Not Responding error message)I gave up on it, and installed the Seamonkey Mail & News program, now, I don't use the Seamonkey Browser,(still use FF) but, the Seamonkey Mail & News works a lot better than TB ever did, when you keep drowning and struggling with something and you cannot keep your head above water, it's time to let go, and I'm happy I did too! maybe someday TB will work with Vista, but, I got sick of waiting for that "Someday" that never seems to come -- Gateway MX6453 * AMD X 2 Duo Core 64 Mobile 1.8GHz * 2GB * 533MHz* DDR2 Memory * Vista Ultimate OEM/DSP |

Deleting entries in a database marks the items as deleted, and they don't show anymore. But they still exist and take up all their space, until you compact them. That actually "takes out the trash." |

You might be interested in a handy little extension named Xpunge.

rick752Premium join:2006-01-27 New York 1 edit | I remember you telling me about that a while ago. I really don't need that ... the built-in one works fine for what I need. I just need something that cleans up once in a while so that I don't forget and let it become like the OP's mailbox. But thanx anywho, Mr GK -- EasyList, EasyElement, & ABP Tracking Filter Subscriptions for Adblock Plus |

| I just migrated to Thunderbird from Netscape 7.1 mail, It was surprisingly a very effortless transition. What I was wondering is does Thunderbird force folder compacting on DST changes the way netscape does?
It should be noted I'm quite a packrat with my Email and have most everything sent and received since about 1995. It's been up converted cross converted and had a few other conversions coming from Netscape mail 1.something to Thunderbird. I remember one time I had to do a two step conversion process to keep everything I had. |

I've got 2 GB of mail stashed away in a bunch of folders in Tbird. The compaction runs so quickly that I don't normally notice it. |

However, I couldn't correlate DST/DWT (Daylight Wasting Time) switch to why an email client would compact its files. I guess it does it twice a year whether it needs to or not. |

I guess it does it twice a year whether it needs to or not. Yes, odd, but it did.. Actually it would force a rebuild any time the clock was changed over a certain amount. I can't speak as to why, just know that it does. It was often quite frustrating, to come in after "Your Clock has been updated" and have to wait for a folder compact to complete as you clicked on each one. No it wouldn't just go ahead and do it, it sat back and waited for you to click on each folder before it started the compact process. |

rick752Premium join:2006-01-27 New York 3 edits | It seems I vaguely remember the old Netscape Mail doing a compact on every folder I clicked on every great while. Is THAT why? ... automatic only on DST changes? I never knew what set that off because I think compacting folders was a manual operation then.
Just do what I told the OP to do here and your won't need to bother with that anymore. -- EasyList, EasyElement, & ABP Tracking Filter Subscriptions for Adblock Plus |
