Three(3) VAIOs here.
#1 PCG-FXA63 - 2002 model year. Display model purchase. Works fine, right hinge broke last year. Battery is toast. Will run machine for 10 minutes and drop off dead. Retired to closet. 
#2 VGN-A190 - 2004 model year. Typing this post on it. Guess you could say that is is working fine, huh? 
Original battery is still at 87% and will run for 2 hours with minimal tasks.
#3 VGN-AR190G - 2006 model year. Haven't started it yet today. Yeah, it works great! Battery is still at 100%. Can get a full Blu-ray playback out of battery or 2.5 hours normal use.
*NOTE* All machines were the top of their lines, with the A Series and AR Series being Sony's "Flagship" at their debuts.
As with anything, YMMV.
