3 edits | Changed SSID & key then lost wireless connection with WRT54g
I found the post from another member regarding the loss of a wireless connection to a WRT54g so I read through his post and replies. My setup and what I did are different, here's my info.
Time Warner RoadRunner is my ISP, I have a WRT54g v2.2, Firmware v4.20.7 with my desktop and 1 printer ethernet wired to ports on the router so that I can print using my wireless laptop. I also have 2 printers plugged into USB ports on my desktop which can also be shared when the desktop is turned on. Currently I only have 1 wireless device which is an IBM T42p laptop.
On 12/31/07 I changed the SSID and generated a new WEP 128 bit Encryption Key but left all of the other settings alone. I've input the new SSID and Encryption Key into the wireless connection for the laptop but I can't connect. I can make an ethernet connection from the laptop to the router but not a wireless one. I even tried disabling the wired connection thinking that the 2 might conflict but that didn't help either.
I also have the 3 license version of Norton Internet Security 2008 installed on the desktop and laptop, I have 1 unused license which I have plans for. I have the Windows Firewall turned off and have checked and rechecked all of the NIS 2008 firewall settings but don't see anything that looks like it would prevent the wireless connection. Besides, NIS 2008 was already installed on both machines when the wireless connection was working before I thought myself so "smart" and changed the SSID and generated the new encryption key. I really don't think it's a NIS 2008 firewall setting problem.
Prior to me changing the SSID and Encryption Key I had no problem with the laptop getting a wireless connection to the router and printer. I thought I could handle changing the SSID and Encryption Key but obviously I've done something wrong. I could sure use help from the wireless network guru's here!

| Couple of things come to mind...
1) Are you absolutly sure that you entered ssid and key correctly in the router and each device? Remember they must match exactly. 2) Be sure that all wireless devices have the new SSID and key. 3) Can you ping the router? 4) Have he rebooted the router and all devices?

| Let me dissect point 1 from jazzman916 .
Some utilities use a passphrase to generate a hexadecimal WEP key. Make sure to use hex on both ends.
Make sure you're not using WPA on one end and WEP on the other. |

| reply to jazzman916 Jazz:
I clicked on my wireless connection where the SSID is already visible.
Then clicked on the Change Advanced Settings tab which shows the wireless Lan adapter and Client for Microsoft Networks.
Clicked on the Wireless Networks tab. Window opens showing my SSID and Automatic because I've already set this up but am doing it again. Check mark in Use Windows to configure my Wireless Network settings.
Have my SSID highlighted, and click on Properties. Properties window shows the correct new SSID.
Network Authentication = Shared because I set up the authentication that way in the WRT54G so it will use a WEP Key. Data Encryption = WEP Entered the new Encryption Key in Network Key and Confirm Network Key. Key Index Advanced = 1
Clicked on Authentication Tab Check mark in Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network. EAP Type is Smart Card or other Certificate Check mark in Authenticate as computer when computer information is avaiable.
Click on Connection tab Check mark in connect when this network is in range.
Click OK and window goes back to Wireless Networks tab showing my SSID.
Click close and I'm back to looking at the Word document containing the SSID and Encryption Key info.
Right click on Wireless Network, click on my Wireless Network, have entered the Encryption Key twice but still won't connect.
Have restarted the laptop numerous times. Have NOT unplugged or rebooted the Router but always use Save Changes button. There's no on/off button so I'd have to unplug it.
I'm still lost, Michael -- **** Hanging out & trying to learn from folks who know alot more than I do! **** |

I also use a 128 bit WEP Encryption Key.
I think that's what you are getting at.

1 edit | reply to CatLover53 Uncheck 802.1x - you're not using it with WEP.
Use open, not shared authentication. Long, technical story, but you get encrypted traffic either way. The term is a little misleading.
Once you get WEP working, get rid of it.
WEP has serious vulnerabilities and there are a number of widely-available tools for exploiting them. Move to WPA and use a long, random key to ensure that only you are using your network.
edit: I assume the T42 has a Cardbus slot? You could use an external card that supports WPA. |

2 edits | NoStrings,
I unchecked the 802.1xx, changed to Open.
Do I have to disable the wired connection for the wireless connection to work?
I disabled the wired connection before clicking on Wireless connection and Repair, which failed.
Am restarting laptop now. I'm not sure the IBM T42p laptop supports WPA because if it did the Best Buy, Geek Squad tech would have set up my wireless connection using it.
To use WPA I have to set the router to WPA also, correct? The router has WPA Personal, WPA Enterprise and the same selections for WPA2.
If I can connect using wireless after laptop starts, I'll post back. If not I'll also post back with info.
Sorry for multiple edits, I should leave this post alone and post seperate with router WPA setting questions.

Wireless connection failed, am using desktop wired connection to post.
Yes the laptop has a slot for a WPA card but I don't understand why the WEP setup isn't working!

All of the cards listed as possible for the mini-PCI slot on the T42 are WPA-capable, even the 2100 according to Intel. |

Check the preamble setting, too. If it's long, try short or vice versa. |

I've checked and rechecked every setting I can find on both the laptop and the router. I still can't get a wireless WEP connection.
edit: I'm using this link to the IBM T42p: »www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T42p
Should I start a new post and try setting up a WPA connection? I'd really need help with that as there's several WPA settings available for the WRT54G!

| Sure. I never leave. Well, almost never. I do have excellent backup coverage in any event.
If I were you, I'd start with a clean slate: Reset the router to defaults, make sure you can associate and pull an IP address with no security. If so, then follow the manufacturer's guide for setting up WPA on the router and use the Windows wireless config on the laptop to enable WPA. |

2 edits | NS,
Do you mean Linksys or IBM/Levono? Where would I find the Manufacturer's Guide to setting up a WPA wireless connection?
Also my desktop and a printer have wired connections to the router and I don't want to lose those while I monkey around with a new wireless setup!
I know I must seem like a really stupid User, I'm not stupid just uneducated about networks. That's why I always had Geek Squad do the setup. I always tried to watch what they were doing so I'd learn, but it all happens so fast that I couldn't.

No_Strings Premium,Mod join:2001-11-22 The OC | What's to lose? Resetting the router shouldn't bother them, unless you're running services for which you've opened ports on the router. |

| No_Strings, I did it! I have a WPA TKIP wireless connection up and running on my laptop! When life is good it's very good.
My new project is to wire up my extra desktop to the network and get it running on one of the Teams. I know that just about everybody who's really involved with BBR is also involved with one of the Teams. I just need to look at them and pick 1 or 2 to join.
I can't thank you enough for all of your inspiration, patience and help.
MOST SINCERELY, from Michael (I wonder if I can get my Dragon to roar occasionally?) A very happy WPA wireless camper -- **** Hanging out & trying to learn from folks who know alot more than I do! **** |
