Minor News Correction

Karl, just a small correction to your title:

"Viatalk Raises Prices Via 'Unfees'
$3.45 hike placed in below the line charges..."

It really is a $0.95 hike to the $2.50 they were already charging.

Probably.... but we don't really know that for sure. Not to mention this separate new (?) USF fee you just found.

Where are you seeing VT charging USF?

sbradshaw wrote that he or she saw it on the VT web site. I'm afraid to look.

I was reading over the changes they just made to their TOS. This is what it says:

"A Regulatory Recovery Fee of $1.97 will be charged monthly on all ViaTalk lines.

As per FCC requirements, all ViaTalk lines are required to be equipped with fully functional, nomadic E-911 Service. As a result, an E-911 Fee of $1.48 will be charged monthly on all ViaTalk lines ordered or renewed after October 1st, 2006."

So the old fees of $2.50 are being replaced with these new ones. I guess will see soon enough.

You asked a good question in the ViaTalk forum if there are any providers out there that don't charge these fees. I wonder if anyone does that anymore (include everything in the base price). I also thought Voicepulse used to do that, but (although small) they currently do charge a USF fee.

Ohhh. Thanks. My mistake.

Too bad. $1.50 a month for a fee they don't have to charge is not cheap.

Wow. I just did the quick math, and on the month-to-month plans, taking into account their respective baloney fees, Viatalk and VoicePulse are priced within ONE DOLLAR of each other for a year's worth of service ($317-$318).

Doesn't take into account the 2nd line feature, etc....

Maybe we should petition to make E-911 available for opt-out. I would never use one of my pure VoIP lines to call 911. I'd reach for a cell phone or my TWC DP. (And I even have a PBX at home w/ all my lines connected to it. So I can ensure that 911 calls never go to Viatalk.)

It shouldn't be the easiest thing to opt out of... since not every one is smart enough to be able to remember what the limitations would be after doing so.

17.76/yr for something I'll absolutely never use is, at a minimum, very annoying.

At what point do they state, "according to the IRS we must pay taxes", "according the to federal government, we must comply with OSHA requirements", careful you don't end up with free service and $50 worth of surcharges

The time might be ripe for a class action suit...then again, maybe it hasn't already happened due to the contracts we sign.
