Re: Central PA HD additions very soon

That sounds very plausible Travelfan. I just think that Comcast should move less watched networks to the digital side. MSNBC on average only gets 300,000 viewers during the daytime and maybe 500,000-600,000 in primetime, way behind networks like Fox who get close to 1,000,000 viewers in practically every day part.

Cypher,

Maybe they will add Style prior to the 2/14 switch? Although, I would love to see some of the HD prior to then too...

I also think it's kinda dumb how they will have them intermixed with the premium HD channels...

My current promotion for Digital Cable ends the end of Feb and I'd really like to see some more high def content before I decided whether to keep Comcast or move to another provider. I wish they would just bite the bullet and add CBS HD, at the very least.

Good news for all of use here in Central PA. I just got confirmation that the date is the 14th, not the 19th. The info I had was a projected date.

Happy Valentines Day from Comcast.

I agree with u Jericho, but I'd move CN8 first - I don't know anyone in Central-East/NorthEast NJ that watches it - maybe the folks close to Philly do... That said, I think they should pull a Chicago here and move almost all channels to digital-only.

yeah, the intermingling with premiums is kind of annoying but hey, they can put the channels whereever they want at this point, I'm just glad we are getting them.

Does "Expanded Basic Service" = Clear QAM? The only HD we currently get in State College with what I would call "Expanded Basic Service" are the local HD stations, everything else (non-premium) is in "Digital Classic". This would truly be great news if that's finally the case.

No, it should only mean that you can get the channels now with a Comcast HD receiver without a digital plan. (For that, the HD rental is $9.95) or if you prefer, a cable card or two.

I'm sure they will encrypt them.

Even if they put them where CMT was on Ch 55, which would be under an Expanded Basic Service Trap for basic subs... they will still encrypt it.

Re: Central PA HD additions 2/14/08

It was either wait until this upgrade and see how it is or jump to DirecTV before their price hike. I jumped. With this town's history with cable television (from the TCI to Adelphia month-long outage, to Comcast's ridiculous promises of features and quality), I have lost faith that it will increase any time soon. And everyone I've visited who has DirecTV in town has been happy and seen their choices of programming only increase.

So I won't get to see what happens to the Slowskys. I can live with that.

My biggest gripe was that upgrading from Analog service to digital via comcast's website, and understanding what I'm getting, is nearly impossible. I've been pondering it for a while, but decrypting their packages was a hurdle. It shouldn't be *that* confusing to figure out what stations I'll be getting at what price and what options are available.

So when are we getting the CW in HD in Williamsport?
How many areas do or don't have it yet?

I agree, ExitWound. Not only is their website deceptively confusing, it's no better when you actually speak to them on the phone to upgrade. I recently called to upgrade to the Digital Preferred package, which is the exact nomenclature used on the current price schedule they sent to me, & politely asked what additional channels I would be receiving over the Digital Starter plan. She couldn't (or wouldn't) give me an answer. Instead, she put me on hold, then came back with a price for (her words) "Standard Cable with Digital". When I asked for clarification that the price she was giving me was for Digital Preferred, she very snippily barked back, "Maam, this IS the package you requested, would you like it or not?!" She never did give me an answer on the additional channels I should expect to receive. Normally I would have chalked up her misleading, arrogant attitude to her, perhaps, having a bad hair day, but this is the way I've been spoken to over the years whenever I've had to contact them. I've never called & spoken to anyone there in anything other than a polite tone. Wonderfully kind & articulate friends I've spoken to have had similar experiences when going to the local Comcast office, as well. Comcast's customer service is more like customer abuse. They seriously need to address the way they deal with their paying customers if they'd like to keep them.

I'm very happy to see Comcast is finally adding some new HD channels here! Now I'm not as mad that D* won't work in my house.

I've seen people become unemployed (instantly) for less rude treatment. Not saying this hasn't happened to you, but I wouldn't consider it the "norm", nor should it be.

Just to clarify a point on this, as I know it will cause a stir...the HD channels themselves will be put in most likely after the 2/14 date. The Analog will be moving over to Digital on the 14th, and HD channels may take up to a week following that. Lots of testing to be done.

Do you know what's been taking so long, and why so much testing is involved?

Is it because they are integrating the Adelphia and Suscom aquired systems into the Lebanon digital headend? Are they aligning all of the digital frequencies or something?

Reason why I ask this is because I notice that even the Williamsport former Suscom system AND former Adelphia System in Scranton are getting the same exact channels on the same exact day. Seems to me like the original system cluster (Lebanon, Pottsville, Reading) had expanded to include Hershey, Harrisburg, York, Lancaster, State College, Williamsport, Scranton, Dunmore, Taylor.

I can understand the holdup if so many systems had to be connected via new fiber backbones and all of them have to coordinate their local band plans for the main headend to insert all of these new digital channels on those frequencies. Also some of the acquired systems use SA digital boxes, therefore the correct SimulCrypt(tm) hardware has to be installed at the master headend in order for all systems to be ready.
