A wise policy, imo.
There are unsubstantiated claims that the updater actually works now-- whether or not that's true I have no idea.

I thought about maybe waiting, but went ahead and installed this update. No problems, but a couple of notes--

I was given no option for a 'custom install', as I believe I've always been given in the past-- the 'additional language support' option, e.g., could always be unchecked. This time, it just installed without options (and is about 30MB larger on my machine than the previous install).

My firewall alerted me during install to a connection request to 'jmetrics' or some such thing, which I denied (a different request to strictly 'sun-java' I allowed).
That 'jmetrics' is their data-collection arm. The install proceeded smoothly and without issue, though (once the installer got through pouting about the disallowed connection).

I give Sun-Java high marks for the way their uninstaller has improved.
This is maybe the third time in a row that uninstalling the previous version has left no traces behind.
YMMV of course, but that's been my experience, so good for them.

Also, another 'new feature' is that I wasn't allowed to download the update without first allowing a cookie-- something that was never required before.
Lovely. And bush-league, imo.

It's there, in a different location, and it goes by quickly if you're not looking for it.

Your post provided me incentive to keep my eyes open for it.

As you begin the install it's a checkbox located in the lower left corner "Show advanced actions panel". The user needs to manually select this to see those options.

The options that you refer to are not installed by default.

Hmmm. I believe you. Yeah, I maybe vaguely recall that 'advanced panel' thing, and I guess I didn't select it.

But there ya go-- a 'veiled reference' to a custom install selection. A cookie required to download the installer. A data collection connection made during install.
Trailer-park behavior, imo. City-slickers. Used-car salesmen. Whatever.

I'm not criticizing Sun-Java, specifically-- it's just yet another indication of the direction the web and software and life in general seems to be trending nowadays-- 'we want/require to collect some information about you-- now, later, and forevermore'.

I'm not putting on my tinfoil hat yet, but I do see this behavior as but another tiny step in the process of the complete and total elimination of any and all personal privacy.

Arrgh.

Verified by yours truly, Mr. Skeptic!

I do not allow automatic updates of course and kill the updater through msconfig, but when I read the thread here, I ran the update module as Cudni See Profile shows in his screenshot, and the uninstall, reboot, reinstall the latest version became a thing of the past. I updated Java on several machines at work with Vista and XP as well, and all was as smooth as a baby's behind.

I see the waiter coming with the cart to prepare the Steak Diane tableside. After the Lindt Chocolate mousse, a glass of Oban 14 year old over ice..
