| [INFO] Anyone notice the lines..?
I've been noticing lines that go down the highway. There about a foot apart. And only seem to be in certain areas which appear to be in dangerous areas of the road. Like step hills, curves or places where there is run off from hills close by.
I haven't seen any trucks out laying this down .. so must be late at night there out there. |

| Noticed those too on Tuesday afternoon driving on the Wilbur Cross Parkway going Southbound up the hill (and down the back side) from the West Rock Tunnel and also wondered what they were.
I figured they were either going to rip up the road, again, for repaving; or was some new product that might improve traction during bad weather. |

From what I've read this stuff is water/precip. activated. |

I do notice in places where there would be more likely for freezing conditions..
Geez more chemicals for us to deal with.. I haven't seen a truck yet putting it down. They must wait till were all off the roads.. --

Have you seen the DOT plow trucks with the whitish tank on the back? I think that's the stuff. |

| reply to Rungel One of my ATVing buddies drives a plow truck for the town of Southington. A lot of towns (and I think the state) have stopped using sand. Allegedly, there were studies that sand was ineffective after it had been run over. The granules would round out and no longer provide traction. And of course, our environmentalist "friends" had a hand in it's demise as well.
Anyways, they're using some stuff they call "magic salt". It's some type of salt that's treated. You may see it on the roads during a snowstorm; it looks green. Instead of the driver controlling the drop rate of the mixture like they used to, it's now controlled via a computer. I believe the computer reads the speed sensor of the transmission and drops at a rate based on speed.
At first, I thought no sand would create worse roads. I can't say I've noticed the roads are any less slippery. I have noticed a much much cleaner garage, motorcycles out enjoying the warmer winter days and the roads in Cheshire are no longer red following a snowstorms.

Regular ol' untreated salt loses it's ability to melt ice at around 20 (or is 12?) degrees or less. The Magic Salt apparently has some type of hamburger helper thing all up on it to extend salt's workable temp range.
I'm all about getting rid of the sand. It used to be a month or three before we got all the sand off the roads each Spring. Now one or two good rains are we're clean. |

But yes the roads are clearer less sand on the sides to pick up to.
