Bingo! You are probably noticing them mostly on bridges and places that have a tendency to freeze!

From what I've read this stuff is water/precip. activated.

Yep .. i bet that's it.. I do notice in places where there would be more likely for freezing conditions..

Geez more chemicals for us to deal with.. I haven't seen a truck yet putting it down. They must wait till were all off the roads..

I think they can put it down 24 hours before precip. is expected. They probably do it late at night.

Have you seen the DOT plow trucks with the whitish tank on the back? I think that's the stuff.

Oh right.. and i have seen trucks with a white substance like sand in the back.. I was thinking when i saw it that must be pure salt.. which prob was.. but i have seen those tanks
