@rwjf.org | new IMG and worse picture quality I don't know if anyone else has noticed or maybe it's just me, but...since yesterday when I got the new IMG, the picture quality on all channels, including HD ones, seems to have degraded. Anyone else see this?

Nothing has changed on the channels themselves, though.

| I'm connected via component video and have no change in picture quality nor do i experience any green vertical lines in my picture since the new IMG update. I know that a setting change will correct the green line if you are connected via HDMI. I can't exactly remember where i read so do a search on this forum for the exact change that must be made for HDMI connected users.

also do you also notice somewhat of a overlap on down the lefthand side?

| I have a Panasonic and there is a setting for HD size. You can pick 1 or 2. I had is set to 2 which came recommended but switched to 1 which make the image very slighter larger enough to get rid of the lines. There was a yellow on the left and green on the right. Didn't notice any overlap. When watching live HD broadcasts like the news there is no grainy picture looks like it did before the upgrade. | |

3 edits | Count me in. Sound is out of sync also. Going to call Verizon for replacement STB when I can get the time.
FYI - AVS forum has a dedicated thread on the QIP6416 (HD DVR) STB. Lots of complaints about stuttering and overall poor PQ.»www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre···&page=97
Note: If you change the output resolution in the IMG, the 4:3 override settings reverts back to "stretch" or something like that. That means if you had it set to OFF, it's back ON. PITA.
To fix: Go into the diagnostics menu and change the 4:3 override back to OFF (OFF means 4:3 will be scaled to 1080i).
New for the IMG upgrade: "Power Off - Select - Menu" will get you into the diagnostics menu.

2 edits | What's funny about this is that I complained about this in the "IMG Bugs" thread and was told that it's "not a bug." Several customers were actually told that the software would actually increase image quality, not decrease it.
It's a bug when my video was looking acceptable on Monday but turned to shit the day of the upgrade. Across the board, my SDs look worse. -- $ sudo rm -rf /

1 edit | Re: new IMG and worse picture quality OK, I fired up my tried-n-true saved recording of HDNet's 10 minute long test pattern. Saved for just this occasion - something is wrong out of my STB.
The pluge (color bars), convergence, and resolution tests are dead-on. Best I've ever seen. That means the static pictures are perfect, dynamics are crap.
Problem points to memory / processing problems in the STB- it can't keep up with real-time video. Result is dropped frames or playing games with compression.

It's a bug when my video was looking acceptable on Monday but turned to shit the day of the upgrade. Across the board, my SDs look worse. Spent some time last night with the new IMG on the HD-DVR (most of my interaction since we got it was on my SD boxes, we use the HD-DVR as a backup / overflow box in conjunction with a Series3 TiVo).
All the complaints about the SD Channels are 100% dead on - they look worse across the board with the new IMG. Blurred. Most noticeable if you tune to Music Choice / Urge - the static images really point up how bad it is. The text is nearly illegible.
Thankfully we can avoid recording / watching SD on this box and use the TiVo for our SD needs. HD image quality seems to be the same - which was never great through the 6416 to begin with because of the lack of native resolution passthrough.
How did this box-busting piece of crap roll out across the entire nation, and this issue not get noticed until it hit our area?

| Re: new IMG and worse picture quality So I'm not going crazy. I've been saying this for the past week. You're right Knarf, it's worse on static images. I noticed it on ESPNews, where the score scroll at the bottom of the page became blurry and almost unreadable. I put in a post in the Verizon Direct forum and their only solution was changing the 4:3 resolution to 480I, which makes absolutely no difference. I actually had to modify my tv picture settings to make the SD picture on my HDTV look better. I had to increase the sharpness level about 20%. | |
