it is an option because not everybody runs both the router and software firewall in tandem. And the poll, when done, will give some ideas who runs what with what

I'm still amazed how so many people who think they're security experts use a software firewall IN ADDITION to a router, not to mention antivirus + anti-spyware resident in memory and running all the time, scanning every little thing. A router + common sense does the trick, but I guess a lot of people come up short on the latter.

To each his own.

I'm definitely no "security expert" -- just use software firewall just an additional "layer" of protection mainly to monitor/control outbound traffic:
* Just in case something should get by my other defenses and tries to connect to the outside.
* Block apps I do not want phoning home.

Smoothwall 3.0 and Kerio 2.15. It's a laptop, so I need a software firewall because it connects to different networks....

Re: Firewall Poll 2008

Thanks for the poll.

On both computers we use a router with software firewall, namely, Windows Vista on one and XP firewall on the other.

Router for two desktops. One only uses Windows XP Firewall in addition, the other uses Comodo v3. Laptop also uses Comodo v3, but does not connect to router all the time.

Why is "Software with Router" an option? Wouldn't that represent most here?

Nope.

I have many computers here, however, only three have s/w firewalls -- all are behind the router. I voted "router with s/w firewall."

Thanks for the poll, Owlbet See Profile.

We both use Zone Alarm and a router with software firewall.

Unfortunately the loopback issue with Sygate was never resolved before they went down. This means that Sygate will let out anything going through a local proxy without a prompt. No local proxy then you should be ok. 5.6.2808 ver is most available. Have used other versions 2818 and 3304 and 3311, but went back to 2808 as it seems stable.

However, I am uncertain how this loopback issue affects newer antivirus programs that may use this method in their design. Maybe someone more knowing than I can chime in.

What disappointed me so much in Sygate was that they proudly announced that they had no intention of ever fixing that gigantic hole. They seemed to be proud of that huge vulnerability. It was at that point I knew I would never recommend it to anyone. I think they could not fix the hole without a total rewrite and there again...very scary thing for a firewall to have been designed in such a way that it would have such a glaring problem.
