Just received this router with my new adsl service. I have no reference documentation on router settings, etc. Where is this hidden?

Well I contacted Verizon online technical support to ask for the reference manual. What follows is the transcript of the session. Am I being unreasonable? Sheesh!!!!

Welcome to Verizon Live Chat. You have selected to chat about:

Question: I am looking for the reference manual for my Westell 327W modem/router?
20:11:52 A Verizon Service Representative will be with you shortly. Thank you.
20:12:22 Agent Gandharv has joined.
20:12:22 Gandharv: Chat ID for this session is 01170822068.
Gandharv: Thank you for contacting Verizon Help and Support, it's my goal to provide you with outstanding Service. My name is Gandharv and I will be working with you today.
Gandharv: May I confirm your DSL no# XXXXXXXXXX please.
Bob Trautman: Yes that is correct.
Gandharv: Thankyou.
Gandharv: Please elaborate the issue.
Bob Trautman: I am trying to configure my firewall within this router. There is no help screens with the router configuration options. I have to enable port fowarding. Port forwarding does not seem to be working.....
Gandharv: Okay.
Gandharv: So as I understand you wnat to secure your wirelss network. Is that correct?
Bob Trautman: Wired more specifically. Wireless is already secured.
Gandharv: Okay.
Gandharv: May I know the make of the Modem.
Bob Trautman: Sure it is a Westell 327W modem/router
Gandharv: Thankyou.
Gandharv: May I know which operating system you are using ? / Operating systems are like window XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2000 etc.
Bob Trautman: Windows Vista
Gandharv: Thankyou.
Gandharv: Please allow me 2-3 minutes to pull up my resources.
Bob Trautman: Sure no problem, thank you.
Gandharv: Thankyou.
Gandharv: Thank you for staying online. I appreciate your patience
Gandharv: May I have your first and last name please.
Bob Trautman: Bob Trautman
Gandharv: Thankyou.
Gandharv: Mr.Trautman, i would like to inform you that these type of issue are handled by a advanced support desk however I will
try my best to resolve your issue.May I begain?
Gandharv: If I am not able to resolve your issue then I will provide you the No# for that department.
Bob Trautman: Could you not supply the reference manual on this router??????
Gandharv: I really appologize for the that however I will try my level best to resolve the issue. This will not take much time.
Bob Trautman: Could you please answer my question. Is the reference manual to this router available? If not, may I ask why?
Gandharv: I would like to inform you that there is no manual available online becouse westell how is the manufacturer of the modem do not provide verizon with that however what you can do is you can serch the manual on westell site if they have any manual provided online.
Gandharv: I would request you to give me a chance to resolve the issue.
Bob Trautman: This is interesting......I checked Westell's website. The website states that for this model all support is provided by Verizon!!!! Someone must have the reference manual. I imagine your senior support personal must have a copy. I am capable of configuring this router with the reference manual documentation that I would normally have. I imagine you must have had other requests for this manual? This just does not make sense.
Gandharv: Mr.Trautman, at the momemt we do not have any manual online however I will forward the request for the higher level so that you dont face any problem in future.
Gandharv: For the time being please allow me a chance to resolve your issue.
Bob Trautman: I wasn't prepared to go into the specific problems. My intention was to ask you all for the documentation so that I can refer to it as I configure the router. Please forward my request for the reference manual for this router. I have a fair amount of reconfiguring of this router I need to perform for my personal/business needs. I would rather wait until I receive the manual.
Gandharv: Sure, I will do so.
Gandharv: I would like to inform you that firewall can be turned on by going into the Graphic interface of the router and click on security and then you will get the option of firewall.
Gandharv: You can try it and I belive this will work.
Bob Trautman: Currently I have the firewall off. If I enable it, then I will have to configure my port fowarding/ port triggering rules so that I can continue to work. Since I don't have the reference manual for some troubles I was having, the firewall is turned off so I can continue to work.
Gandharv: Okay.
Bob Trautman: Is there a reference number that I can refer to as I wait for this request to be forwarded for the documentation?
Gandharv: I would like to inform you that I will forward the request to my senior and then he will take action on it Howerver for the time being you can contact the Premium Technical Support and they will resolve your issue.
Bob Trautman: How do I contact premium technical support, is this a fee for service?
Gandharv: No,it is a paid support.
Gandharv: They will let you know about the charges at the begning of the call.
Bob Trautman: Hmm, thank you for your time. I don't believe I should have to pay for reference documentation that should be included with the router. I would like a copy of this session emailed to my verizon account if possible?
Gandharv: Sir, you can save this session once the session will end and you can save it.
Gandharv: I am providing you the ticket no for the reference of the chat.the no# 0000178747394.
Bob Trautman: Okay, thank you for your time, goodbye
Your session is now closed.
Thank you. Have a nice day.

Here's a user's guide for Westell 327W I've found around the net assuming the modem's firmware is 4.04.03.

Added Westell 6100 User Guide for completion.

Hey, where did you dig that up? Will certainly make troubleshooting for others a bit easier now.

You're welcome! I know how you feel, and I question verizon also why they don't provide such an important documentation. Goodluck!

The link where I got the documentation was posted here and last time I checked, it's not available anymore. I hope it helps many.

I read somewhere that Verizon likes to keep customers "dumbed down" Now I see it first hand!

Is this the right manual? They're calling it the Westell VERSALINK™ GATEWAY (MODEL 327W15-06)

Is there not a manual, in PDF format, on the CD that came with the modem/router?

I had the same exchange with Verizon. They probably purchase the old models from Westell. Anyway, you don't really need a manual...this site is very helpful:
