[Poll] Utility Suites - 2008 Member Choice

Those of us old enough to remember the days of DOS, also remember the importance of a good utility suite. Who would have been without an undelete function, a disk repair utility or something which would defragment your hard disk? Software vendors combined tools into suites that provided PC owners with a basic set of tools to improve the performance of their PC. As modern operating systems evolved, many of the tools which we counted on to make our computers run better were included. What was once something you had to pay for, became free of charge, as long as you were willing to shell out the bucks for the next upgrade of your operating system. Even with the increasing number of features and utilities packed into a modern operating system, some vendors have continued to offer tools not available at all or poorly implemented by the operating system vendors. One question we will explore in this poll is: Has the utility suite become irrelevant to modern computing? The final choice in the poll (like last year's) will be for those who have found no excitement in purchasing a group of tools to do something our operating system already does or doesn't even require. The poll itself will restrict itself to products which group a number of utilities designed to improve the performance and functioning of a modern PC.

The Wikipedia definition of Software Suite:

Very true! but there is more than just that.
A lot of us have found that the push by companies to offer what can be perceived as a "total complete package" had its own issues.
There were suites that maybe had a very good component or two, a number of average ones, and inferior ones tossed in so they could advertise 'completeness'. We considered it bloat (which is a whole other issue with some programs).

A trend started to chip away at the issue by gathering a set of superior components, thus creating our own "suites".
Suite packages would include things like a defragger, which was a waste for a lot of us (between the superior ones: Perfect Disk and Diskkeeper, along with Windows default it was not wanted or needed).
So as smaller, more specialized ones appeared, we began using them, like jvpower tools, TuneUp Utilities, and especially the free CrapCleaner.

Be interesting to see how many people have gathered their own components.
I have done so, and include TuneUp and CCleaner as 2 of my suite components.

Nice job on the poll Kramer See Profile.
I picked the collection of smaller single purpose utilities, which includes crap cleaner and several others.
Didn't want to muck it up with a vote for ccleaner though.

I didn't realize that "CCleaner" was "Crap Cleaner", otherwise I would have voted for that.

Learn something every day.

And yeah, if I would have hovered over the link I would have noticed ccleaner.com

oh well

TUU and CrapCleaner here. Also voted for "Collection of smaller single purpose utilities."

Another suite I like is Advanced Windows Care Personal. It's free.
