MVM,

[Poll] Hex Editors - 2008 Member Choice

A hex editor (or binary file editor or byte editor) is a type of computer program that allows a user to manipulate binary (normally non-plain text) computer files. Hex editors that were designed to edit sector data from floppy or hard disks were sometimes called sector editors or disk editors.

By using a hex editor,a user can see or edit the raw and exact contents of a file as opposed to the interpretation of the same content that other, higher level application software may associate with the file format. For example, this could be raw image data,in contrast to the way image editing software would interpret the same file.

I don't know if you can really call it an editor in the narrow definition, but I use FileAlyzer -freeware to look at things and maybe to do something.
I'm not real skilled at it, so have no need for a big gun.

Thanks for the poll jazzman916 See Profile!

I chose "none" (other than notepad), although I do have SciTE (the Scintilla Text Editor) which came with my Ruby install. I only use it when I play around with that occasionally for funsies.

Thanks for the opportunity to vote.

I voted "none" since I do not use hex editors except just to poke around in the computer (dangerous but fun). For said poking I tried WinHex but it was only on the computer for about 15 minutes.

Add another vote for Ultraedit.

I've been using it for years, and I love it. Not only can you use it as a hex editor, I love the feature where you can do "column edits" on a raw text file. It allows you to to cut-and-paste things in a column. Example: If you want to remove the first 30 characters of every line, you can do it with this utility.

Another vote for UltraEdit. It's fast, easy, has a ton of useful features. Been using it for years and wouldn't be without it in my toolbox. It just gets better with every release.

Voted "other." I use an older version of Hex Workshop. I like its ability to edit absolute sectors.

I also use Notepad++ (with the hex editor plugin).

Thanks for the poll.

Other: I use the SPF Editor. SPF is pre-PC software which originally was run on IBM mainframes. It has the only editor I know of where you can manipulate lines of text (move, copy, delete, etc.) by typing commands in a prefix area on each line. It also has very powerful find/replace commands.

Visual SlickEdit v8. I especially like the fact that the same UI is used on both *nix and Windows. I have a couple of web pages I support and the are on a Solaris box. Also, since it came from the IBM e line of in-house editors, it has similar block and line manipulation functions as the SPF series mentioned above.

I use Crimson Editor for text/source, but Frhed for actual hex editing. I particularly like the adjustable width of the hex display and the price (free).

Another vote for UltraEdit. I've been using it since version 1 (a long, long time ago). I don't think I would know how to get along without it anymore.

Back in the day I used one. These days, I don't have much of a need for a hex editor.

Great job on the Poll jazzman916 See Profile, thanks!

I voted none.
In the old days, I did play around a little with them, but now I figure the hex with it...haven't really had a need in quite a while that I can think of.

If I ever do again, I'll be sure to check out the 2008 Member Choice Poll, before choosing one.

XVI32 for Hex, EditPlus for text/html/php/etc.

I'd view hex in TotalCommander's viewer, but it's linked to edit in XVI32.
