What do you expect?

What do you all expect? You walk into Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco, WalMart, etc and what's the first thing you see. 50"+ HD televisions. Everyone I know has one, although I don't, and doubt I ever will unless I don't have a choice. My point is, you have your HD TV's and want HD programming, so Directv has to launch new satellites to handle the additional programming demands. Did you really believe you would not be seeing increases?

I was a Directv subscriber for 7 years. My first bill was less than $35 per month, which included a slave receiver. They did not raise rates every year like the cable companies. Then the locals came on line and that was an additional $5 per month. Then an increase around 2001. Then another a couple of years later. They raised them $3 again early in 2007. That's when I made the switch to FIOS. Now a year later here comes another $3 increase. Get used to it. You demand the HD programming, you're going to have to pay for it with bill increases.

Frankly, I knew that once DTV launched their two satellites (which can't be cheap) that they would eventually raise their rates to help pay for it. Paying $5 more for such a nice additional selection of HD programming can't be bad.

I've just read where Comcast is raising their rates 5% in many areas across the country, so you're right, this is something that's going to happen across the Cable/Satellite area. It's the price of doing business with them.

I think that it's great that Dish Network has said that they will freeze their prices for a little while, but they'll be launching their two new satellites too, so you know they'll have to pay for that some how later too.

Personally, I like that the dish folks are constantly keeping up with their technology (as the cable guys have been doing with their fiber optics). If they weren't moving forward, then I'd be the first one to gripe about the constant price hikes, but it's hard to do it when you are getting a little something more each time.
