1 edit | DNS redirection
Well, I am a little disappointed. Today I decided to VPN to my company intranet using the connection I pay for at home. All was good at first until I needed to visit one of our corporate websites and I get redirected to a Windstream search website.
Scenario:
VPN to work, works fine. Browse site at work. Go to another, redirected. Go back to previous, works fine. try the other, redirected. Sneaky suspicion I was getting redirected.
Call support, could not convince support person it was not me, my VPN or my connection. Sent to 2cnd level who understood what I was talking about.
Corporate server down you say? Nope, change to a root server(4.2.2.2) and it works. Change back to WS DNS server, it doesnt work.
Here is the issue I have with this problem. If I was given the task of fixing that website, I would not be able to troubleshoot or try to fix it because of redirection. If support at work needed an error like 404, website not found, I would not be able to give it to them. A perfectly fine working site cannot be reached. They are messing with my VPN connection.
I am not angry with Windstream for jumping on that bandwagon, but I am disappointed I was told it cannot be turned off.
I thought DNS was part of the package we paid for?
Crappy VPN client? Yep! Fortunately, we are moving to a new client, I do not know how that one will work yet.
Advice to all? There are alternative solutions. Do not use Windstream DNS if you are having issues. You may have to add a corporate dns server to your network configuration if they have one.
egamacate urself Network neutrality: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_neutrality This doesnt necessarily hit Net Neutrality on the head, but its close.
BTW, The 2cnd level support person I spoke with was very nice.
