hdmi is a waste of time going right to a tv

hdmi isnt benefitting anyone when its used from stb to a tv. how many tvs have the ability to utilize the dolby 5.1 sound on an hdmi cable anyhow? none thats how many so why use it this way? if the hdmi leaves a stb and goes to an av recirver then yes by all means use it but if going right to the tv you gain nothing using it instead of component cable anyways.

ha ha, cheers

fat ralphy.

Unless, Ralphy, you have a TV that can pass thru the 5.1 with an optical output.

I don't know about anyone else but the reason I use HDMI is because my TV only has one component connection with analog audio. (It has another that supports digital coax only, but I use Tivo and it only has optical audio) Meanwhile my TV has two HDMI inputs. Considering my Xbox360 is already using my component connection with analog audio, my only option is to use HDMI for the Tivo STB.

You got it wrong while getting it right. The reason HDMI is a waste with the 6416 is that the 6416 screws up the signal, has bad scaling, and doesn't pass through native resolution. You may as well use component because it presents less issues.

When you say 'less', you aren't saying 'none.' Would you mind elaborating?

I disagree. With a modern (non-CRT) TV you have a digital display device driven by a digital STB. Using HDMI keeps the signal digital for the whole signal path. Using component connections means that the STB has to convert it to analog and the TV has to convert it back to digital. This process is guaranteed to degrade the signal quality, even if not enough to be visible.

I think he was specifically talking about the motorola box not doing the job it should.

Yes, I'm saying "none" while leaving open the possibility that there could be some unforeseen problem via component in the future.

Isn't doing something to prevent theoretical degradation that in reality you cannot see the definition of a waste of time?

HDMI Pros:

All digital
Uncompressed
A/V in one cable
Neat/Clean
Future Proof
1080p/60

Cons:

HDCP
10m length supported
Compatability Issues Among Adopters
Compliant: doesn't mean all features available

* I read somewhere Component will fade out
due to the MPA's push for HDCP

I believe you are right. I think high-def DVD players in particular down-convert the signal to SD-only over component. For SD, there really is no advantage using component over S-video, so I would guess component inputs will slowly become deprecated.
