| Offroad GPS
I'm looking for an automotive GPS for my 4x4. All the units I found are for street navigation and that's exactly what I DON'T need... I need a GPS on which I could see my position in coordinates (LAT, LONG) and my altitude so I could know where I am when I go off roading in places where there are no maps (I live in South America).
Waypoints and routes are also a must in the unit. The color screen may be optional.
Any ideas?
Thanks. |

| I would think any hand held GPS would fit this bill. Just get one that has a mount and a power adapter for vehicle use.
I use a Garmin Rino 110 in my jeep and car all the time. As long as it is on the dash I have no problem getting reception. |

| Thing with portables is that the screen is a lot less readable than automotive units...
I can't believe Garmin or Lowrance haven't think about a unit for a 4x4...
Anyway... thanks for the advice. |

| reply to BlackApron I did a google search on Offroad GPS and got 10 pages of references topped by:
which had several references onto comparisons and guides on what to look for,
Personally, i Think it would be easier (and cheaper) for me to use a good LAP-TOP computer - I remember that many of those portable GPS devices could interface w/ PC software mapping. (I saw relatively good systems 5-6 years ago - when I was into that stuff.) -- ~~ "Don't mis-underestimate me, too" ~ |

I can't believe Garmin or Lowrance haven't think about a unit for a 4x4... They probably have, but considering how long it took for them to come out with a 'Motorcycle' specific unit, i'm sure they'll take their time getting to the 10 people that want what you're asking for. |

| reply to BlackApron Off-road GPS !! I can't believe that I found someone interested in the same product. I drive a 2007 Hummer H3 with the factory Nav and I have contacted so many people in trying to track down a DVD disc that would take me off-road. I own one of the most prolific off-road vehicles and they don't have specific DVD's for going off-road. I contacted Delorme and they make topo maps on disc for laptop PC's but the reviews are mixed. If you know of anyone who makes such a product, please contact me and share what you have found- wfturner@pacbell.net |
