1 edit | [Bug] Lost sound and FLV
Help me troubleshoot this, please. It may be software, but I'm not sure.
In the last couple of days, I've lost sound and the ability to play most FLV files. The sound issues extends to games, FLV files (both IE and FF), and mp3s played through WMP 9.
SoundRecorder won't play at all; it loads a file, but won't play it.
WMP seems to play a file, but the visualizations get all choppy, and seem to hang.
FLVs will load, but stop running after about 2-5 seconds. Quicktime movies play, but have no sound. MPEG movies play without sound, but are jerky, and seem to hang.
I know the speakers work; I've plugged them into another device.
I don't think that I've updated anything software-wise recently. Flash version is current. No recent hardware updates.
Next ideas?
(Yes, I've rebooted ) |

| From your post, it's more than just an .flv issue. Sound card gone bad or a driver issue or something.
I'd check the Event Viewer for errors, and Device Manager for any sound device problems there.
Been running any Registry cleaners, by any chance? That could be it, too. |

I run Spybot every other night, but nothing in the logs there. |

Also, you can open any media file with GSpot, and it will tell you if you've got the needed codecs installed or not:

| Ahh...nice tool. It's listed some missing files, too: C:\WINDOWS\System32\wmv9dmod.dll C:\WINDOWS\System32\RealMediaSplitter.ax
Now to figure out why they're gone, and what to do about replacing them.
Thanks for the help.

| No, it's a SoundMAX integrated audio board on my IBM MB. Good thought, though.
Downloading a fresh copy of that DLL from Webzila, then doing a full reboot seems to have done it.
