worldrevolvr : I just bought a Samsung 33 inch LCD for the bedroom over the weekend. The 330 series. 2 HDMI inputs, component, etc.

Had it hooked up to a standard box initially, everything was fine. Ordered an HD box through verizon on Monday and then that night remembered that it would not communicate with my multi-room HD DVR I already had in the family room/den.

So Tuesday morning I called verizon and was on the phone with them for various transfers for about 3 1/2 hours total. Nobody could terminate the original order, some thought it had shipped others thought it was just waiting to ship and could be cancelled, managers were involved, etc. A total nightmare, finally I was delivered to cancellation of services as the thought was I could cancel the HD box and then order another HD DVR for the bedroom sammy.

The cancellation department said the order had been shipped so there was no way to cancel and I would just have to send it back and order an HDDVR if that is what I wanted to do.

So I go home yesterday around 5:30 and there is a box by my trashcan, lo and behold it's the HD receiver.

I decide to go with it for now and unbox it and set it up with the TV, HDMI connect. Authorization code on a form but no directions on how to set it up on the internet so again back on the phone with Verizon. Friendly guy at verizon does all the box tweaking from remote and says that even if I had the website I could not set it up online because the HD box was still being shown as - In Delivery -. I assured him that I was standing right in front of it and that is had been delivered. He said great, this will take 15-20 minutes to authorize, so no real reason to wait so I said thanks and we hung up. I then watched the display to all sorts of hijinx (as is typical) and took my daughter to her softball game. 3 hours later I come home and go upstairs and see the clock on (always a good sign) and go do other things, I come back an hour later and turn on the TV.

Currently Unavailable. But I have the guide.

I should also mention that I came here yesterday and read this thread and thought oh ho, I have a sammy and I just ordered an HD box. So I had that in the back of my mind and also brought my laptop upstairs with this thread open and tried all the things suggested.

I even hooked it up with just the cable feed with no luck.

So again, another call to Verizon. Another friendly guy. He said the box was set up but not initialized. So he went about redoing that. He estimated 7-13 minutes and after he hit the box I had 1-49 immediately, all the digital took the rest of the 13 minutes to come on board.

While we waited I chatted with him about Samsung and issues with HD boxes. He said he had not had one incident he had not solved and that he did not consider it an issue. His name was Micheal Taggert I believe and did his job fantastically. After 15 minutes I had all my channels and life was good. HD looked spectacular and the only thing wrong was 480 content no filling the screen like I like.

Quick jump into the video menu and 480 set to stretch and everything is great.

I think I would prefer if the TV did the stretching like it does on my Sony downstairs (480 just seems to look a little better on the Sony), but I don't see how to set that up with the Samsung. The plus with the HD box doing it is I get no pause between HD and SD content like I get when the Sony takes over for a second to set resolution.

So that is how my Currently Unavailable was solved.

Now it's just down to whether it pops up again in the future.

anon : Here is how I'm dealing with the hdcp errors. 1st when i lose my signal, I unplug my box from power for 1 minute. then I plug the box back in when it cycles back up. i turn my tv 1st, wait a second or 2 then turn your stb power on..and the picture is back....i also found that upgrading your hdmi cable spec to 1.3a or higher helps to minimize the issue. The stb wants to authenticate with the tv, so the tv has to be on 1st .... you will notice after you turn the stb power, a small flash of the read out will occur. this is the stb searching for reception of the tv. now this doesn't completely solve the issue but it makes the issue livable. i say once every 2.5 months i lose my signal, when it used to be once a week..it also help to buy component cables and hook them up in case you lose signal in the middle of a good movie. you can just switch the source quickly...

Dark picture issue after samsung tv firmware update solution

anon : After some further research into my darker picture issue i was able to resolve the problem. the tv techs who did my firmware update couldn't tell me, samsung couldn't tell me, i found it myself. i found this on the net: after a mainboard swap some of the internal settings might be wrong. my main board color pallette was set up for a lnt-4661f tv, and i have the lnt-4665f. this gave me the darker then usual picture. to fix this issue turn your tv off. get your tv remote and press mute 1,8,2 and then power, a menu will come up choose the "option byte". only mess with these settings I mention and nothing else. make sure your screen size is correct: panel option = 46amw for lnt-4665, and 46am for lnt-4661, mine was set wrong here. make sure that your lvds tx bit = 10bit for lnt-4665, and 8bit for the lnt-4661, mine was correct there. model mode for the lnt-4665f = tulip side, the model mode for lnt-4661 = tulip, mine was wrong there also. after making those changes turn your tv off and then back on to save the settings.. this fixed the dark picture issue, thank God. if you have a lnt-4661 and have a firmware update make sure these settings check out otherwise there will be picture issues..i am surprised those tv techs don't know this...but i thought I'd post this to help others...

Changing the mode on the TV to 16x9 (which will induce some slight overscan) solves the problem entirely with my set. The Samsung's picture I am getting with Verizon here in Maryland is great whether viewing HD or SD channels.

For me, his is an acceptable solution until Verizon fixes the new IMG. One note: The Motorola HD DVR Box must be set to its default settings when using the HDMI port, i.e., SD 480I or SD 480P must be set to off as previously discussed in this thread. If not, the Samsung cannot sync with the Motorola box using its HDMI 1.3 input for SD channels.

Setting the FIOS Box so that SD is off will cause the Verizon box to do the upscaling for SD (the Samsung will report all channels as 1080I) and the Samsung will then display SD channels with letter boxes which preserves their original aspect ratios which is what I prefer to view. Also, the Motorola box output of 720P / 1080I HD signals will be upscaled by the Samsung TV under HDMI to take advantage of its native 1080P.

OB

anon : It's not a samsung issue. A number of people with other brands have been having trouble with Verizon FiOS since the latest IMG update. Vizio, Hitachi, Pioneer, Panasonic, and yes, even Sony. The common theme is 1080p flatpanel, not projection.

I have the green line bug (green vertical line on the right) and image tearing on the left. It started as soon as the new IMG was installed. I use HDMI and it happens when I have the STB set to 1080i. It goes away when I set the STB to 720p.

Also, whenever I adjust the STB resolution, the STB resets the resolution for standard def to 480i. Well, my Samsung LNT 4661 doesn't support 480i and a message comes up "non supported mode." I can see all the HD channels fine but the SD channels do not come in. To fix, you have to do what NJBOB said, hit "power" "select" and "menu" buttons (when I do it I don't have to hit them all at the same time, just in that order). You then select (using the directional buttons on the STB, not the remote) the resolution for 480 from "480i" to "off".

Other than that advice, I don't think NJBOB knows what he is talking about. I got great 1080i before the IMG update and after I get image distortions and the green line.

anon : some of you are missing the point here. This isn't even a Verizon problem. It's a Motorola/Samsung problem. period. There are lots of little quirks that make it work for a while, like resetting boxes. I found that just turning the tv on first, waiting 30 seconds then the stb make it work most times for me, and this was BEFORE the new IMG. Of course you can like some people said downgrade the signal to 720, but why. You got that big tv for a reason didn't you? There is just something about the handshake at that resolution the TV won't accept it unless it's been powered on for a few seconds. Hence the firmware fix FROM Samsung. it does fix it, you plug it into the stb and push the button and pop problem goes away.

Thank god this problem was my roommates and not mine.
anon : here's my story, I spent $2999k on this lnt-4665f back in may of 07, the tv worked great out the box. then 2 months later i turn it on and black screen, sound but no picture, i called Samsung. they said its a known issue with this model they have a mainboard replacement. I had a Samsung recommended a tech replace the mainboard. i had the mainboard replaced and got the tv back and the picture was way to dark, so i called Samsung again they said the tech didn't make the proper adjustments. I had the tech take my tv again to make the adjustment, i went down to the shop to make sure it was right and it looked good. I got it home and used it for another 3 months till 3 days ago i noticed flickering in the picture, tried all 3 hdmi inputs same thing. to verify it was not my set top box i moved it to my 32 Samsung hdtv in my den and no problems. I switched the source to s-video and component and they both worked fine. so i called Samsung they said have a tech look at it again...i turned the tv on yesterday and hdmi was fine again, weird, but turned it on again today now it says "not a supported mode". called Samsung again all they can do is have a tech look at it, totally ridiculous, my question to Samsung was, can this hdmi problem be corrected after the mainboard has already been replaced?...and how can i trust this tv to hook a play station 3 up via hdmi..

I was determined to solve this hdmi problem, i decided to test a few things. since i was stuck with component i decided to see if i could get digital optical sound . I'm missing that great hdmi sound. i hooked the optical cable to my tv and then to my set top box and what do you know no sound... i called verizon fios to see if there was some set top setting i was missing, there was none its suppose to work as soon as you plug it in. i put the stereo cables back to get my sound back... while i was in the set top box menu i decided to restore the set top box to its default settings to see if i could get my hdmi back and what do you know.. it came back...i can only deduct that the tv must have some incompatibility with the set top box. i also noticed in my tv menu there is a setting for software updates via usb connection.. if i have another issue with hdmi i will look into the firmware upgrade.

called verizon again they said a Samsung tv firmware update should solve the problem. i called Samsung again and got a 4k # to have a tv shop upgrade my firmware, got it done and i still get signal drop out , also the picture is now darker then it was before, colors don't jump out anymore my back light is set to 10 also. I'm using component now but, I'm seriously considering getting a new Sony kdl-46xbr5 lcd since those tv's don't show the incompatibility problems...

after going thru all of this it looks like the issue remains...and my mouth is watering for that new Sony with the 120mhz refresh rate, i can get 1 new for $2400 bucks delivered to my door....and the issue disappears forever.

anon : I have the same problem with my Samsung 61" DLP HDTV. It all started about a month ago. The Mode Not Supported message appears and I have to unplug my verizon box to reset it. What is worse is that the HDMI input on my TV actually fried about 2 weeks ago and I had to have circuit city come and replace the circuit board. I am afraid that the DVR caused the problem. Further, the probelm I have now is that when I try to follow the suggestion on this forum to change the 480 override, I cannot change it using the Menu button when the DVR is off. If I press menu when the DVR is off, nothing comes up on the screen. I may have to switch to component cables just to keep this from happening and keep from frying my HDMI input again.

Wgboi71 : I have a Samsung 40" LCD HDTV Model LN-S3241D. I have had Numerous issues with my FIOS HD DVR STB since its install almost a year ago (Feb 2007).
My Install took more almost 10 hours! They replaced the ONT 3 x's, HD/DVR STB 4 x's, HDMI cables 2 or 3 x's they even tried component cables and it didn't make too much of a difference (they never left me cables either) all within those 10 hours! The only reason they stopped was because it was getting late and they could not figure out why the picture looked so bad. Besides, the techs needed to go home and finally eat dinner. Yes TECHS (Plural), they had about 4-5 people at my house! The later it got the more techs arrived. The other techs in the area completed there intalls and wanted to lend a hand to my installer. All the guys were Very nice and all tried to give ideas to help out!!

It was late and the assigned installer called it quits for the night. He called dispatch to reschedule me to complete the install so they could provide a clear, quality picture. He was to come back by 10 am the next day but that NEVER happened and i never got an answer as to why they never came back to complete the install.

I finally called and complained about a month later. They sent a "Specialist" who walked into my house, never turned on the TV and said. I cant fix the problem because its the best you will get with your SAMSUNG TV. I told him my TV was only 3 Months old and worked FLAWLESS with Comcast HD. He told me Fios uses a better Signal then Comcast and cant compare the 2, it would be like comparing an Apple to a Potato and said nothing more he can do and left! He at my house for no more the 5 minutes!!!!

So i was left with many unresolved issues, words that are shadowed, every image has a fuzzy line around it, small pixilations on the screen as the techs described it and many more. This is just a SMALL portion of my many issues with Verizon Fios not to mention my 2 separate no call no shows on the initial install. I lost 2 days of pay and never reimbursed. All this just to find out that my $1100.00 Samsung LCD HDTV is not compatible with Verizon Fios.. WHY NOT?

anon : Hello experts,

I have an interesting problem that I would like some help on PLEASE!

I have a Samsung 56" DLP with an HDMI Cable running to the Motorola QIP6416-2 Verizon FiOS STB. I have an interesting problem occuring when I browse VOD or change from HD to SD programming channels...

My understanding is that the STB DOES change the video format for different channels is this correct?

For example, when I browse to VOD using the remote, I can view the guide and select the movie or show I want to watch, however when I select "Watch Now" and the show actually begins to play, my Samsung TV gets a message saying "Mode Not Supported" but I can still hear Audio. My understanding is that this is a problem with the HDMI handshake? Does that sound accurate?

I also get some very weird green screen when swapping from HD programming to SD Def channels, it's like the STB is changing the format it sends.

The ONLY way I have found to get this to work is using Component cables with seperate Audio cables, is there any way to adjust settings on my Samsung or STB to accept any format?

I have tried every setting for Video Format on the STB, they all work except for 1080i ( I have a 1080p DLP ), and they adjust fine using the remote, however when you change channels to VOD you still get that "Not Supported Mode" message.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

Alex
