anon : Just to clarify about exchanging the box - I did that, in fact, and because we have no Cogeco locations here it was done via Canada Post, believe it or not, over 6 weeks of wait time as boxes went back and forth. The brand new box did exactly the same thing within a week, on another (different) broadcast of House on FoxHD. So exchanging the box doesn't help, either all the boxes have the same problem, or the problem isn't the box.

As I stated in this post, it took Rogers a year to get firmware that stopped this issue for their users. I am speculating that we may be in the same boat

HOUSE was scheduled to be aired between 10PM and 11PM. Whether you clicked on the RECORD button right after the game ended, or whether it had been set to record days in advance, the recording would have stopped at 11PM (as indicated by the Guide).
I'm a HUGE House fan so I obviously didn't trust this recording to the guide. Since I was watching the game downstairs at 10:25 I went upstairs and set the 6416 to do a MANUAL recording from 10:30 to 12:00, this type of recording doesn't use the guide AT ALL.

After making this post, I started playback of the episode, checked back at 20 minutes and at 21min. the picture froze. I FF to 23min. stopped the playback, did My List and restarted the playback at 23min. - this gives me a black screen as the DVR is playing back. At the 1½ mark, the standard message came up "to delete-or not delete" the program. So it did record the first 21min. of House and then 1:09 of dead air.

We were watching things last night, some off the DVR and same paused live TV, and amazingly there were no issues at all. I got suspicious, so I went and checked the firmware and I went up from v10 to v16 now, and the guide software was updated to v74 I believe. So all my problems for now seem to have been resolved with a simple firmware update that seems to me, should have come out long long ago, considering I was 6 versions behind.
theninjasqua : Some interesting developments following the visit by the tech this morning...

He checked my line out and the connection is perfect, no errors he said. Having no problems with the connection, so he said it must be an issue with the box itself. He told me to take it over and get it swapped, which was fine by me, I just wanted it fixed. Also to note, the tech that came was excellent, very helpful and friendly. I came away from that very positive.

So I run over to the Cogeco store at the mall all prepared to swap it, until I start talking to the girl that worked there. I tell her about the tech visit this morning and the problem that I am having with the DVR, and she kind of made me feel silly by saying that its a common issue, lots of people are having problems with it including herself, and she proceeded to run through the various issues with the DVR.

Here is where it gets interesting... she said that there is a known issue with the software on the DVRs that is messing up recordings, and that an update is on the way to fix it... problem is, according to her the update won't come until March. In the meantime, Cogeco is crediting DVR accounts $5 a month starting from December until the issue is fixed. I now have about $20 of credit on my account. She told me that I can get it swapped anyways, but it most likely will not fix the problem, and said if anything it could get worse. Plus she said if I do swap it, thats the last time I can swap it. I didnt know what to do, I kind of wanted to swap it but at the same time was concerned that it would be the last time I could swap it. Plus if it is going to be fixed in a few months, then maybe I can tough it out, especially since I had programs still recorded on it. So I ended up just keeping it and I am going to wait it out. Although I would kind of like more then $5 a month for this inconvenience.

Another thing that she mentioned was that she was a bit surprised that the tech didn't just mention to me the issue with the DVR to save me the trip in. She said that they(meaning the retail store people) have been telling the techs for months that there seem to be issues with the DVRs because tons of people have been coming in hoping to swap. She basically said that the techs were in denial about it.

Anyways, looks like we will have to wait for this supposed update. I dont know why it is going to take so long. Can anyone from Cogeco on here comment on this or confirm it? I'm not too thrilled about this all, especially with the amount per month I am paying for this service.
--

-theninjasquad
