The online stuff is free and convenient, but you never know when something like this will happen and there's no guarantees.
On the other hand, if you download your email to your system and it is deleted from the mail server, you are SOL if you have a similar failure, only on your own system.
I guess having it online to me is more beneficial, but in the end you want a copy of important stuff in both places.
