Re: Can't ping my IP

By default the DHCP server on the motorola 2210 is on and your computer would be slapped with the ip 192.168.1.64/dg=192.168.1.254. When you are connected, the public ip is on the modem and not the PC which is probably why it does not respond. Try this. Open the motorola config page using »192.168.1.254/ in the browser, click on Advanced>>Connection Configuration. if it asks you for the Modem Access Code, it's the 10 digit number on the yellow sticker at the bottom of the modem. On the Connection Configuration page change the Connection Type to Smart Keepalive and under LAN settings select YES, Use public IP address and click Save Settings. Might prompt you to restart the modem, so do it. Once the modem is back on and you have the first four LEDs green, open the DOS command prompt on your PC and do an IPCONFIG. If your IP address starts with a number between 60-79 or even 99 and all settings on your PC are set to allow DHCP echo reply then it should work. Cheers!

HUGE thumbs up for that post. It's now in the FAQ: »AT&T Midwest/Ameritech FAQ »How do I make a Motorola 2210 pingable?

I have a brand-new, "naked" DSL line connected to my Motorola 2210-02-1002 modem which is connected directly to my Win2000 PC. I don't have a router or software firewall right now, but I can't seem to use the Line Monitoring/Line Quality tools here at DSLReports.com (very useful site) because I am getting error messages saying that my IP address is not pingable.

I have read all of the messages (including this thread) and FAQs in the forums and thus have changed the 'Connection Type' to 'Smart keep alive', under LAN settings selected 'YES, Use public IP address', and clicked 'Save Settings' on my modem and restarted the modem and also rebooted my PC. Still no dice.

Any ideas what else I need to do in order to be able to successfully ping my computer so that I can use the Line Monitoring tools?

It's not your PC it's the Moto modem. Read the FAQ's and it will tell you how to make the modem pingable.

I did read the FAQ:
»AT&T Midwest/Ameritech FAQ »How do I make a Motorola 2210 pingable?
(and "hexwiz"'s post in this thread) which detailed the steps I followed in the 2nd paragraph of my post. The IP address of my PC is now 76.x.x.x and the modem is set as specified in the FAQ.

Any idea what might still have me crossed-up?

Do you have any software firewall or AV software that has a firewall built in on your PC?

Nope, my PC is a currently a naked Win2000 SP4 box. All I did was build it from the Microsoft Win2000 Pro CD and then added SP4 and all other MS patches. Then I did a standard install of AT&T/Yahoo's DSL package.

No AV. No firewall.

Use this web site to ping your public IP
Whois Ping Port Scanner NSlookup & Traceroute Tool

If there is no reply to the ping there is another configuration that will work. You would need to install a PPPoE client on the computer and configure the modem to use "Bridge Mode (PPPoE is not used)".
