| I think my 2wire telus modem is cracked.
"I just cracked a 2wire router today using TheGreatVirus's script with fake authentication." »forums.remote-exploit.org/archiv···837.html
I keep getting trouble with 2wire modems on telus dsl. Using a Seimens Modem I get no disconnections, so I know it's something peculiar to the 2wire modem.
I keep having to powercycle my modem. It loses the ability to surf online.
It angers me. I want to know, if my modem is infected. Will my messageboard passwords be known to the crackers who infected my poor modem?
Explain the bad things that could be because the darn modem got infected?
I'm sure someobody caracked the darn thing. |

I'm sure someobody caracked the darn thing. Or you have a bad modem. Contact your ISP or modem provider. -- BBR's Shooting for a Cause! |

@telus.net | reply to Blue Turtle I've gone through 3 NEW 2 wire modems. I like the 2 wire because it's easy to change the mac. |

I've gone through 3 NEW 2 wire modems. I like the 2 wire because it's easy to change the mac. You are obviously too young to remember vaudeville, but this thread brings to mind a classic vaudeville comedy routine:

| reply to Blue Turtle I lost connection again, so I went into diagnostics like I usually do. In diagnostics I can press Test and it'll get back online.
This time, I signed in with the admin password, as I must do to access diagnostics. And the system password change screen pops up!
I dunno. I look with a leery eye at this situation. |

| The System Password change screen should come up if you are using the Default Password and Login. Basic security states to change the Login AND the Password to new values. It you are using admin/admin for example, you should try something_else AND something_else instead.
As to your DSL line disconnects, that is likely your telephone wiring and/or your line distance and/or your inside wiring are the real problem.
You have been through 3 (three) 2Wires and they all do the same thing/have the same issue? That points to having a bad DSL line or your line conditions are very poor.

| reply to Blue Turtle "I like the 2 wire because it's easy to change the mac". I can't think of an easier way to disconnect you from your carrier without shutting down your modem than changing your mac. I haven't heard of it being done with a dsl modem, but some cable modems have a vulnerability that can allow someone on the same circuit to take over your line by changing your mac and using your mac on another modem.
It is far more likely that the 2 wire filtering is not as good as the siemens, and spikes in signal to noise ratio cause them to drop the signal. Have you double checked that all of your phone lines have dsl filters? Is there any relationship between incoming/outgoing phone calls and getting knocked off line? Do you have a fax machine?
An attacker isn't going to keep coming back just to knock you offline, unless it's the neighbors kid whose ball you kept when it came over the fence. A skilled attacker there to steal your passwords isn't going to leave warning signs like your connection dropping all the time. And unless you are doing your banking on a messageboard, a skilled attacker doesn't care about your messageboard passwords.
Despite all of the bad intentions on the internet, there are still far more technical problems than cracked hardware. |

| reply to Blue Turtle It's only with the 2Wire that I get disconnections. With my old dlink and the Seimens I get hardly no problems.
My password is over 20 characters, and has various characters. It has before I went online. I went into the change system password right away.
I got telus to test the line and they said it was fine on their end.
If I use a 20+ character password on the Seimens modem, it locks me out from being able to acces the admin settings. I think only a 5 key password can be used on the seimens without getting locked out from admin utility.
And I am worried about identity theft with my messageboard postings. I don't want some pervert gunking up my threads or posts without my permission. It can be devastating. So that's why I want to know of what harm can come to me if my modem is cracked, and that's the one thing nobody has answered, yet. I 'm still waiting. |

You are miles away on the receiving end and that is where the problems are located most all of the time. The signal degrades over distance. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

At this point, you've shown nothing that would indicate other than a hardware or line problem. Since, by the information you provided, you like to change your router's MAC address, you may also be creating your own outages. -- BBR's Shooting for a Cause! |

| reply to Blue Turtle If all you want is something to worry about: if someone owned your modem, they could redirect your traffic to any site they wished. They could set up a site that resembled your message board, redirect your DNS requests to a DNS server they own and direct you to their site when you attempt to go to your favorite messageboard. They wouldn't have to steal your password so much as you would type it in and give it to them. They could use your IP address and connection in a series of proxies to hide their illicit online activities. I am a relative security infant, I'm sure there's other things they could do. What I do know is, 99 times out of 100 when I dig into a problem, I misconfigured something. When my girlfriend sees me messing with things she always asks "what's wrong", I always respond "user error". |
