Earthlink problems with email to & from SBCGlobal

I have Earthlink DSL and use an earthlink.net email address. Recently I have been having problems that I don't receive emails sent to me from people using SBCGlobal email addresses, and occasionally I have trouble that when I send email to an SBCGlobal email address it doesn't go through (in that case I receive assorted errors from the ISP). I can have them send the same email to me at my GMail address with no problem.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Without error messages (error codes and error text) there isn't much to determine where the issue is or what kind of issue is being seen.

Unfortunately I didn't save the email I received with the error from the email I sent (but I've bookmarked your info), but the person who sent me email that I didn't receive didn't receive any error, I just didn't get (after 16 hours or so).

Another possible issue on not getting email can be your settings for Spam and Virus protection (if the sender did not make a mistake or typo). You would have to login to Earthlink to check your settings and login to WebMail to check your Spam folders.

We made sure she didn't make a mistake or a type, and I did check the settings in Earthlink webmail to see if it was there (nothing in the spam folder -- this is a business email address used carefully that doesn't normally get spam).

Is this a Hosting Account email address because the Residential DSL I have has never had incoming messages go missing from any provider. I've never had anyone tell me they sent me email and why didn't I get it since I've been with EL/MS. Plus I do not know of any posts saying that here in the Forums in the past. Of course bounced messages and returned emails with errors have been posted about.

Also, did you have the person resend the missing email message? It should be in their outbox folder or their sent mail folder where they can easily resend it. If it can't be found in their email program, it is likely they made an error and never actually sent it. It could also be in their draft folder which means it was never sent.

No, this is a standard residential DSL email address. And, the sender sent me several messages that I didn't receive. I guess I will have to assume there was some error on her end.

Have her resend them to see if they come through now. The original emails should be available in her email program to resend as I posted above. If she says she can't find them, then there may be a "user error" issue.

Greetings from the land of the lurkers.

I recently had the same problem. The error from the Earthlink end is copied and pasted below. The message was eventually delivered, three days late. If this isn't what the OP saw, I'll edit my post to avoid undue confusion.

-----------------------------------------------------------
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.
A message that you sent has not yet been delivered to one or more of its
recipients after more than 48 hours on the queue on elasmtp-masked.atl.sa.earthlink.net.

The message identifier is: 1JH1DX-0006i9-5O
The date of the message is: Mon, 21 Jan 2008 13:17:53 -0500
The subject of the message is: Re: Sorry - message got delayed

The address to which the message has not yet been delivered is:

xxxxxxxxxxx@sbcglobal.net
Delay reason: SMTP error from remote mailer after MAIL FROM::
host sbcmx2.prodigy.net [207.115.20.21]: 451 4.7.7 Excessive userid unknowns from 209.86.89.68

No action is required on your part. Delivery attempts will continue for
some time, and this warning may be repeated at intervals if the message
remains undelivered. Eventually the mail delivery software will give up,
and when that happens, the message will be returned to you.

-- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.5.516 / Virus Database: 269.19.10/1240 - Release Date: 1/23/2008 5:47 PM

Yes, DrStrange, I believe that is the error I received.

Then that explains the sending to SBC/AT&T error as they are not taking the email you sent and the Earthlink server is telling you that it is still trying to send it, but the connection is being refused by SBC/AT&T claiming that our server is sending email to too many names that are being returned as unknown (not your message)

Did you ever get a second message with a failure response that included your original email? Or did it finally go through as DrStrange See Profile posted his did in the end after a 3 day delay from SBC/AT&T.

It still doesn't explain what has happened to the email that may or may not have been sent to you from SBC/AT&T. Did you have the sender resend the original emails?

Yes, that email did eventually go through after several days -- but how can I prevent that delay? Other emails to that same sender were received more promptly, and without error, but still took several hours -- much too long.

I won't be able to reach my sender to ask her to resend the emails until tomorrow.

You have no control over SBC/AT&T servers refusing or delaying to take email. It isn't a Earthlink issue either as Earthlink is doing its job trying to send your email, but it is the other ISP causing the problem/delay. You can't complain to SBC/AT&T as you are not their customer, but your friend/associate who is with SBC/AT&T can complain about the email delay and server error message to her ISP.
