Offer up content without DRM, and we'll all be happy

When you're dealing with an industry which clearly hates advancements in technology such as the ability to download content on to any device at high speed and play it whenever and wherever one chooses, it's no wonder folks turn to getting via piracy methods.
I mean the legal ways of getting one's favorite mainstream artists are restricted to the windows or MAC operating systems, and will only work with certain players. If you want to play those same tracks in your linux system, you're screwed! And you pay for that honor. And yet I can find the same content via various other means, and not only get the content just as fast, but I can play it anywhere, and on any OS or player I may have, and that's currently something that one gets for free!
Isn't that working a little backwards here? Offer the content in a format such as mp3, that folks can put on any player, and folks will be happy to buy from you folks again.
I'm not restricted to a certain type of CD player or tape deck, so why should my online music be any different! If anything, it'd be cheaper to offer music in this way online, as you don't have to worry about mastering millions of CD's, that'd save you money I'd think. Until everyone does this, you bet I'll continue to pirate stuff, as should everyone else. It's not like downloading a file is killing anyone here!

Your logic is flawed since Windows is the most popular OS in the world (and consequently plays the most types of media with/without DRM) by a huge margin and piracy continues to grow. I'll hazard a guess that people won't be happy until they're allowed to obtain content for free without threat of legal action. DRM is such a tiny piece of the equation, it just happens to be the excuse that most whiners like to use to justify their actions.

Apples and oranges. Windows is popular because of market share and control. There are millions of songs out there.

The point is that current thieves don't want to pay for content and justify their actions by using the DRM excuse. They won't be happy no matter what if they have to pay for the content that they're getting for free now. DRM is a weak excuse.

That's cool, but you tried to use something as empirical evidence for your assertion and failed. Now all you have is an unwarranted assertion.

You missed the corollary. kd6cae attempted say that content theft is driven by DRM files that can't be played on anything but the two popular OS. The two popular OS are used in the majority of the personal computing environment and therefore a vast majority of the content that is wrapped in DRM is theoretically able to be used without issue by a majority of consumers. Since theft allegedly continues to increase, the DRM excuse doesn't appear to be a valid one. I could care less about why Windows is the most popular OS, just that it is.
