 Nightly Slowdown

I was just wondering if anyone else was having a problem during "prime time" recently. So far for a week after around 5 PM CST my speeds drop from around 1530 kbps to about 1150 - 900 kbps and my pings shoot up from around 35 ms to around 300 ms and it all starts on my 3rd or 4th hop when I do a traceroute and the point where my pings go through the roof is at dyn.centurytel.net. I haven't connected CenturyTel because it sounds like a capacity issue I was just wanting to see if anyone else has noticed this.

Yep, I have 3mb service here, and around Prime Time, I get slowed down as far as 500k, but around 10:00 it jumps back up to 2-2.5mb.

A couple of weeks?? I've had this going on for almost 1 year now.Slow prime time speeds and very high pings almost all the time.I never see anything below 125ms and download has been as low as 128kbps.Paying for 1500/256 and even so it's costly for what i get but it beats dial-up.Don't wanna have anything to do with Wildblue or Hughes i rather go back to dial-up

I'm located in Alabama and experiencing the same slowdown at the same times.

I suggest that everyone experiencing the slowdown call and report it during the hours it's happening. This way, the techs will actually see the problem. The CenturyTel High-Speed Internet Help Desk is open 24/7 at 1-800-809-1410, so it should be possible to report the slowdown while it's happening, even if it's "after hours".

Maybe if enough people report it, they'll actually fix it.

Yep, same here. For the past year, I've had some sort of slowdown, pings would go from 50m/s to 60-90m/s in the evenings, but since the week before Christmas every night it now goes up over 200 m/s. The odd thing is how fast the slowdown occurs, normally it's not a gradual thing, but within 10 minutes it goes from normal to 200 m/s, and then right after 10pm CST, it quickly drops back to normal.

Even since I've upgraded from 1.5 mb to 6mb, we get the same problem. Lately the latency has gotten so bad, I lose sync 4-5 times a night.

But, I've just learned to live with it, after dealing with centurytel's tech support 6-8 times last year about the problem, nothing has been done and I'm tired of calling them up going over the same thing over and over and over.

BTW, off-topic, chd176, do you visit Talkweather?

Looks like my problem begins at the exact same hop.

As of Sunday, February 10, 2008, this problem persists. The issue is just as bad as ever, as right now I've got a ping to Google of over 200ms.

Same problematic hop as everyone else, too.

I tried to ping www.centurytel.com, but it appears CenturyTel's website does not respond to pings. Doing a trace route, however, reveals that the ping there is probably over 200ms as well.

I think it's getting worse, getting no ping times under 340m/s tonight.

Check out my Smoke pings tests so far this morning.
»/r3/smokeping.···d5&r=104

I started this test just as I went to bed and made sure nothing would be hitting the internet. I'll be interested to see when the latency numbers start going back up. Who'll bet around 6:00pm.

It's like they flip a switch and everything goes back to normal at midnight. Centurytel phone support is useless. They keep sending out techs (5 times so far) but its not a problem between me and the substation. It's looking more and more like over sold lines or a major routing problem. I would be interested if some of the other Alabama Centurytel customers would run a smoke test for 24 hours and see if they get the same results. If enough of us can show them where the problem is maybe they will fix it. BTW I'm on the 10mb plan and at night I can't get above 3mb from their test or above 500k with anyone elses.

I think if everyone would send them their trace-rout it would be just as good. The hop everyone is having a problem with is 64-91-92-4.dyn.centurytel.net [64.91.92.4].

I talked with a couple of the local Centurytel guys tonight. They both agree that there is something seriously wrong. I had one call me from the main hub at Falkville tonight and he said that they couldn't pull above 1 mb from their own speed test! They have calls in about the 1 hop that is so bad for everybody. They are supposed to call me back if they can find out something. These guys have been very straight forward with me so far. They talked to someone at the main office and gave them the ip number of that hop and they said they didn't have a clue what they were talking about. Looks like it's going to be a pain to get someone to do something. I think I'll call the corporate office tomorrow if I can find the number. I will call them and wear them out every day if I have to. I'm paying $50.00 a month for 10mb and can barley pull 1mb. I don't think I'm getting my monies worth.

Call the internet help desk and advise them you need a repair ticket for slow speeds at that hop, do mention it so they can include it in the ticket, whether the techs know about it or not. They will send it down and then they can look further into it. Sometimes these things are hard to find because it could be CenturyTel, AT&T, Sprint, Level3, and anyone in between. It all depends on what's connected and where, as in it could be hardware, software, and the list goes on. If everyone is having these problems, all of you open repair tickets. Furthermore, screenshot your results as you have been and send an email to support@centurytel.net or network@centurytel.net. They will handle it from there, or even use the live chat feature to report it. They'll take care of it, trust me.

If they tell you that they need to troubleshoot, advise them that it has all already been done and to open a repair ticket. Get the repair ticket numbers and post them back here for me please.

Thank you.

I spoke with my local Centurytel guy a little earlier and he said they found a problem between I believe he said Pell City and Scottsboro. He said hopefully they could have it cleared up in a few days. I guess persistance does pay off. He also said something about an upgrade to the Falkville location on Friday but he wasn't sure what it was. These local techs have been great! I'll post back when I hear more.

Out of curiosity, how are you contacting the local Centurytel people? Are you calling the toll-free number and requesting to speak with local techs, or just calling the local office?

They call me. They've had my cell number since the first time they came out. I work an hour from home (Network Specialist) and they have to call me an hour ahead of time if they need me at home for something.
