Novelty, OH | Anybody know a Silent UPS? I was wondering if anyone can recommend a UPS that is, or can be set to be SILENT.
All the ones I have now start beeping when the power goes out. I think you can push a button to silent them, but I rather they did not make any noise to begin with.
I want to use it on a device that I would rather not get "reset" by glitches and short outages. If the outage is too long, and it ends up shutting down, so be it. I don't need to be reminded about it.
I think the 350VA - 500VA range should be sufficient.

Lebanon, OR | APC's Powerchute software allows you to disable UPS alarms. Tripplite's software is such a POS that I don't even run it. |

I'm sure if I was determined enough, I could open it up and disconnect the speaker. I'd rather not have to go to that step. |

If you get an APC, if you connect it to a computer long enough to run PowerChute and disable the alarms, it will remember that setting even if you never connect it to the computer again. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how my old APC XS1000 works.

One can usually open up the case, and either disconnect the speaker/beeper, or cut the wire. |

Well, I saw that BestBuy had a cheap 425VA UPS on sale for $30. I went ahead and got it, opened it up, and "disabled" the speaker. Good to go. |

While I understand how annoying the sound can be from an alarm, such as loss of power. I just can't see it being safe. For example what if the battery goes bad or if there is a line fault error, wouldn't you want to know?

Most Tripplite UPSes (example) have a button on the front that will mute the audible alarm emitted when power is lost -- and remembers the setting even after power is lost/restored (push it once and you're done).
FWIW: I buy Tripplite UPSes for my home because I can't stand APC's consumer-level products. I use APC products in datacenters, but am considering Tripplite equipment solely due to how reliable they've been in my home.
