Re: razr

I would tend to agree... I've had Moto gear back when the menus were cr@p, but the phones were built well:

Moto Star Tac/Micro Tac (AMPS/CDMA)
Moto Timeport P7382i (GSM 1900) build in Germany!
I still use my Moto V505, and I do like the V3xx
House phone: cordless Moto

Positives:
Design has improved
Audio quality is good
Standardized USB charger (why can't all phones use this!)
Phones are great for Modding

Negatives:
Overall physical durability/reliability has gone down
Can be paired with a bad network (AT&T GSM) to make you think the phones are bad.

I personally disliked the 'accidental' ringer change settings on the side... too many missed calls.

Don't get me wrong, Moto does make some damn fine phones. When they work, they are easily the best phones on the market. The problem is, they have a very high failure rate, and every model has a consistent issue with that one particular model. Voice quality and feature set is hardly ever the issue, its other junk. Screens on the RAZR series go blank a lot. They also crack more easily than other thin phones. Battery charging has always been an issue with Moto's. Their older proprietary charging port on phones like the e815 was junk, and would stop working period. The new usb design is good, but batteries aren't holding a charge as well anymore.

And I just have to mention one of my Moto pet peeves; arrogance. They try to move certain proprietary stuff on their handsets in the vain belief they're better than everybody else. Up until recently, Motorola was the only manufacturer who put the send key on the right and end on the left, completely opposite of every other phone on the market. Drove me nuts.

I could go on and on, but like I said, if they wanted to stick to designing phones, I'd be okay with that.

The RAZR design also begat some clunkers (the W385 blows because of some features it lacks that the RAZR has, and it commits the additional sin of costing more); however, the RAZR and W385 are both solidly constructed (both the models I am referring to are VZW CDMA models). The very reason the RAZR is still around is because it's still in demand (not to mention that it still holds up to heavy use (I'm also glad that VZW *didn't* carry the ROKR; instead, it opted for the KRZR K1c and K1c Fire, CDMA variations of the K1 and K1 Fire that are wildly popular with the GSM crowd). I have the SB-5120 cable modem (which replaced my SB-4100 due to tier upgrades; I purchased the -5120 like the 4100 it replaced) and it's heading into its third year of use (the 4100 lasted four years). Reliability, thy name is Motorola.

I've got a Razr V3m that is 2 years old and still going strong (with a fresh new battery). My only complaint is the buttons are too small for my fat thumbs.

I don't have any plans right now to upgrade. The Razr A10 or 9 or whatever it is, is neat. But only because it has bigger buttons.

I have a 1st gen razr and also a v323i. Both still work and are excellent phones. The razr survived an accidental drop from a second story motel balcony-only minor scratches. So, they are durable.

I've used Motorola phones for about 5 years now, with no issues ever. Dropped, thrown, sat on, they still worked. They make very durable stuff.
I take it you don't own a razr or any of their v-series phones...

Good riddance to Moto in the cell phone sector.

I agreed. I've had a SB5100 for nearly 4 years of constant use and it's been a rocking modem.

Can't say too much about the phones. Never had one

Love my E815, awesome reception, tolerates many falls, and keys haven't snapped yet. Although its sad the power connector doesn't have a bridge rectifier (playing around with broken charger tip), had to buy a new phone.

As for their cable modems, my trusty sb5100 is nearing 4 years of constant use and it still runs like a champ. I would never use a modem that wasn't a Motorola.

I hate to see them go. While I agree that their quality has been consistently crappy, their push for the next best thing/ coolest new design has helped push the OTHER companies to make better products.

Shaner's post was dead on, where would we be without Motorola pushing the field? Talking on field radio sized bar phones, thats where.

Are you serious ?

Manufacturing is the issue not the mobile designers.

One point in case , the Moto E815 , a rock solid handset made in central China , the same same plant that made the pebl (which I own 2 of as well as the e815 and wish verizon would carry). These phones are rock solid performers and the failure rates were below 1% which is really a feat all in itself.

Most motos are made in coastal china with cheaper parts and cheaper labor. That is the real issue. The same issue plaguing other makers except LG who makes it all in Korea.

The failure rate of even the iphone is up near 9 % but they have very tight quality control and they barely ever leave the factory.

Also take a look at who was the chipset owner in most cases. Those phones that bombed constantly were almost all GSM and almost all coastal china assembles , where the pay is horribly low and they don't care about quality just quantity.

Moto makes some damn fine phones. The UI needs some work , but the hardware is some of the best and toughest you can find. Look at the Nextel lines. All moto and some of these absolute toughest phones I have ever seen.

The Motorola handset business has too problems. Firstly, they are revolutionary rather than consistently evolutionary. They do indeed come out with amazing new styles from time to time, but then they milk them way past their shelf life, whilst the likes of Nokia keep rolling out incremental, but market catching, changes. The second problem, as you say, is quality. Poor quality kills a company at every level without fail - period.

I hope they do quit the handset market. Yes, they have amazing design which consistently changes the form factor in cell phones (StarTac, RAZR), but they can't make a quality working product to save their lives.

Motorola phones suck huge. I wouldn't mind if they continued to design phones, as long as somebody else made them. The failure rate on Motorola is ridiculous.

Motorolas I wish I had never sold:

V120
C333
Q
RAZR
KRZR
