I am really surprised about the limited use of the MVP HOST file. I would have bet the farm this would have had greater use!
I for one am going to be given the MVPS HOSTS file a shot very soon...it looks like a great idea for dealing with scum-ware at its very essence before the junk can get on to a PC and cause havoc.
Why use a host file when you have ad block plus?
Because Ad-Block only protects via your browser whereas a Hosts file protects the whole system whether your browsing or not and is not browser specific.

I use Spybot Search & Destroy combined with Prevx 2.0.

I've been using Prevx 2.0 for the last 6 months .It was a free for a year deal on GAOTD offer. The program leaves little to no footprint in the background and verifies anything added to the computer. Since I've started using it Spybot Search & Destroy has not found one thing wrong . »www.prevx.com/

My Antivirus (Avira Personal Premium) includes antispyware. I have had Spyware Blaster since its inception and would not be without it. I downloaded SuperAntiSpyware a few days ago and I like it.

Great poll pcdebb See Profile, thanks!

ThreatFire
AdBlock Plus for Fx

On demand scanners:

Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D

I found using the Hosts file was overkill, blocked too much (including legitimate videos on news sites) without a lot of work fiddling with it. ABP works just fine and is easy to control. I rarely use IE, so that isn't an issue for me.

I installed 4.0 (pre-release) today, have been a long time user of SAS. I found the scan times are a bit faster, not a great deal. What I was really impressed by was the resource footprint. I went for using about 38,000k RAM to 300k! I’m sure the RAM usage goes up when it’s performing certain task, but the majority of the time in runs and 300k. That is a huge improvement.
