Re: Anti-Spyware Poll 2008

I currently don't have a anti virus program on my computer. I like to believe I'm extremely cautious and above it all but that doesn't work for me. I've used Norton System Works on demand for years. I loved all the sub programs that came with it.It did do its job but I got so fed up with its demand on system resources and its complete infiltration into my computer. I recently used a stand alone version of Norton Anti Virus given from my ISP for free. Unfortunately everything crawls to a halt. It uses so much resources its incredible. Is there a reliable anti virus program out there that doesn't drain your system resources? I will concider a reliable free anti virus program I can use on demand.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

Spybot + Spyware Blaster = Solid protection

Unfortunately, I've found some not-so-cautious PC users who still manage to destroy their system, even with these two programs installed, using the most up-to-date definitions.

The best defense against spyware and adware is to be wary of the websites you visit, and not to download every free game or piece of software under the sun.

I voted SuperAntiSpyware, but actually I'm not using it right now. I used the free version and have tested a couple of pre-release free versions. I will install the new free version when it's final. I also voted that my AV includes antispyware.

There are several other popular free programs that I have used in the recent past, but I do not use them any more for a variety of reasons. E.g. Adaware stopped supporting their older SE version and I didn't trust them after the WhenU fiasco. Spybot overheated my CPU.

Which version? 1.5? They fixed an issue where Spybot hangs in the beta versions.

SUPERAntiSpyware free is the only botkliller i have installed as i use it during recovery from infections in my persuit of new malwares
Hmmm...I would like to know what kind of SW does that program remove because of all the Windows-related infections I got in my box it found none.

They were:

1. Various trojans
2. Ad-clickers

I had to use Housecall to remove them.

On WinXP:
In addition to Spywareblaster, Spybot, and SUPERAntiSpyware I run Threatfire, Comodo Memory Firewall, ScriptSentry, DropMyRights.

On Linux:
Nothing needed.

I'm currently tracking AVP(driveby),Z-lob(codec/driveby),DNS(codec/driveby),Storm,TIBS,Vundo(assorted types c/o keygens/drivebys) to name a few.

FWIW i will concede no one software gets them all,all of the time and the infections i track are really the tip of the iceberg although they keep me busy in new malwares and are amongst the most common seen in help forums

Still if you have new sources i'm always game to go a hunting

Nicely executed poll .. thanks.

Currently, all resident AS requirements are being serviced by KIS7 (chose: AV or Firewall includes Antispyware).

I'm using SuperAntiSpyware Pro for on-demand scanning, and selected it.

I'm also using SpywareBlaster and the hpHOSTS file, and selected those.

Also, the only other security app I allow resident, with KIS7, is WinPatrol Plus. While not a "direct" AS app, I consider it's capabilities extremely beneficial for monitoring/alerting (and other features). So, I also selected "Other".

I use SaS free and Ewido Micro for on demand.

Always heard SaS was a good cleaner-upper but never had to test it firsthand. A friend of mine had FW/AV killin' Vundo but SaS nailed it.

i use SAS Pro, Spybot, Spywareblaster and the MVPS Hosts file.

Thug21-
SAS is a phenomenal cleaner. I fix machine's on the side and that program has literally rescued machine's that I had planned on reformatting and installing a clean OS on. Plus the realtime protection in the pro version is transparent. I cant even tell its running. The best 19.95 i have ever spent. The AbLounge, Ultimate Chopper, and Don Lapre's real estate program do not touch it!!!

The problem that I can see with programs such as SpyBot is that they're great for removing the stuff after infection but we are fast moving to a time in which we are going to have to detect the malware before it actually infects the machine. You guys all know that the crap coming out now practically needs to be bombed from orbit to be taken out.

As for anti-virus software digging deep into the OS... we need that now to detect the crap that too roots itself deep into the OS.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the best way to remove malware is to never get it.
