RealPlayer Called Badware

From StopBadware.org
January 28, 2008 -

said by BW.o :
RealPlayer 10.5 is badware because it fails to accurately and completely disclose the fact that it installs advertising software on the user's computer. We additionally find that RealPlayer 11 is badware because it does not disclose the fact that it installs Rhapsody Player Engine software, and fails to remove this software when RealPlayer is uninstalled.

We currently recommend that users do not install the versions of RealPlayer software that we tested, unless the user is comfortable with the software behaviors we identify or until the application is updated to be consistent with the recommendations contained in this report.
Details at site.

Same here. Uninstalled it from XP and use VLC Player instead of RP and WMP.

I recommend Real Alternative and Quick Time Alternative. All the codec with none of the adware.

But that won't play Rhapsody will it? The reason folks get Real is frequently for Rhapsody which is the best music player on the net as far as the sound. However, it is buggy and unstable and has horrible Real support.

RealPlayer has always been persona non grata on my machines. And I usually refrain from visiting web sites who insist on offering only RealPlayer files.

I think that I last had RealPlayer when I was running a WinME computer. I remember it being a real PITA to get rid of, comparable to getting rid of Symantec stuff.

With Windows, I play Real media with Real Alternative on Media Player Classic. I use VLC on Mac OS. Only problem is, I do not get video with VLC - just audio.

But can I install Rhapsody and have it work with Real Alternative? I don't think so and Rhapsody, as I said earlier, is the reason many folks get Real Player. Plus, no one else offers the variety and great music that Rhapsody has so it is sad that you have to be saddled with Real Player to get great music AND great sound.

Nice find,

Badware, spyware, nagware, takeoverware. Real has worn all sorts of hats over the years.
Rhapsody was bundled with my Mp3 player after looking it over it was gone never to return. Sound quality was no better then any other player IMO.

VLC, WMP, QT Alt, Winamp, or MPC work and sound fine.
Of course depending on the sound card one has install YMMV.

Rhapsody was never used here. I enjoy the following with both XP & Linux players:
Shoutcast
Icecast
Live-Radio.net
Magnatune
Jamendo

I use them both - RealPlayer and Rhapsody.

Since no scanner flags them and I have yet to see these "ads", I will continue to use them.

Only thing *I* consider bad is, during the install, it has the Google toolbar and Firefox checked for install.
Don't want either of those on my machines!

Simple task to uncheck them so no worries!

EDIT: I have even had someone try to tell me that what you see when you first open Real is adware - no! It's a webpage!

»guide.real.com/

That should open with any browser.
*NOTE* RealPlayer is a browser as well as a player(IE based). LOL!

I think the last time I had Real Player was back on Win98. Back before the majority of webcasters went with Windows media.

While I don't use RealPlayer, I am a Rhapsody subscriber,
so I have it installed on two PCs (you're allowed up to
3 computers that are currently licensed to play content).

I do seem to recall that it wanted to install the Google
toolbar, which I opted out of. But I wouldn't go so far
as to call it (b)adware. It's more foistware than
anything else. A lot of applications lately seem to be
in the habit of doing this, such as Adobe reader, CCleaner,
and Nero.

The last time I used Real Player was when it had a SunOS 4.1.4 client.

Well I use v11 and I like it. It downloads you tube videos (.flv) with right click and it also plays them. I did remove the Rhapsody engine via Add/Remove Programs. Yes it did not inform me about it but I'm not worried about it. It's configured to open player only and I never see their Real Guide website.

I had come to the conclusion years ago it was nothing more than spy/adware. Imagine that.. & I was naive enough at the time to have a paid version as well. Live & Learn aye!

A public radio show that I like called "This American Life" is only available through Realplayer. I suspect Realnetworks actually has to pay other companies to use their software.
I sure like real Alternative and VLC!

Ah yes, olde Realplayer I can still remember its "hayday" back when the internet was 'young'. Course that was before it became a bloated piece of crapware that I uninstall on any computer I come across now. Shame.

Xing StreamWorks was another one from the early days. Sure were some crappy CODEC's back then.

Some people still use AOL, which should be deemed as badware.
