Oh yeah - that's what the subnotebook customers want. Right. Heavy as hell and thick as the customers.

Just another example of how people have no clue what the market for this machine is.

Once you see what the logic is, you understand. Here is what I think Apple decided:

1. There is a market among professionals for a 3-pound laptop.
2. Given a 13 inch screen vs a 10 inch screen, people who are looking for 3-pound laptops would prefer the 13 inch.

3. People who use 3-pound laptops do not use an optical drive very much, and when they do, it is usually not while away from home.

4. These professionals would like a full-size keyboard.

5. In many hotels and conference centers, there is wireless internet. For those that do not have it, a $30 adapter is no big deal to carry in your coat pocket if you are saving 2.5 pounds of weight.

6. The main reason for more than one USB port is for people who want to use the optical drive and a thumb drive at the same time. This is very rare. Even so, it can be done with a hub.

7. Potential customers in this market know that these subnotebooks cost about $1500-$2000 depending on size and weight. They also know that SSD is very expensive.

8. Our customers would most likely only take the documents they need for the conference or business meeting, not dozens of huge graphics apps or audio editing apps or multi-gigs of video. Plus, making the Air thicker and heavier to put in a 160 GB drive would not make a difference - there would still be those who wanted 250 GB, or 500 GB. Might as well go for the thin design.

Re: what a burn...

You have no idea what you are talking about.
I use a sub notebook, a dell 700m.

1. Yes there is a market for a 3 pound laptop, my dell 70m is around 4 pounds.

2. Business people prefer a 12.1 widescreen, its great for viewing everything. Not too small, not too big, its just right.

3. You are insane. Business people need an optical drive. They need them especially away from home. How wierd would it be to be traveling and you forgot your optical drive. You would make yourself look like a damn fool.

4. You are lying, you have no idea what business people want. I prefer a smaller keypad as its easier to type, but someeone with big hands might want a larger one.

5. Most hotels only have wireless in lobbies and common areas. They usually have wired ports in the rooms. Have you ever traveled???

Also my laptop has wireless, sound, 2 usb, vga out, wifi, dvd-rw, ethernet, dialup, and firewire and it only weighs 1 pound more than the macbook air.
For 1 extra pound and smaller size I would rather have all those features.

6. Rare to use an usb optical drive and usb thumb drive?? Well yes, unless when you have a macbook air and you do not have an internal optical drive and probably would need both plugged in at the same time.

7. My subnote book cost me $950 two years ago. Its easy to find a great subnotebook for business for around $1000.

8. Most business people do not need a larger hardrive than the macbook air offers so I will give you 8, but for the other 7 points you have no idea what you are talking about.

Why? I've never used the optical drive on any conferences I go to in the last 15 years. Who the hell burns DVDs on a trip? Use a flash drive.

Four pounds and 12 inch screen versus 3 pounds and 13.3 inch screen? That's the difference.

Tell me about this "subnotebook" that cost you $950. I will show you what makes it so cheap.

I have used it for a little over 2 years now and there is nothing cheap about it.

Never burn a dvd or cd?? So how many flash drives have you given away?

Re: what a burn...

12 inch screen, more than a pound heavier, an inch and a half thick, Pentium M, crappy battery life, substandard size keyboard, what else do I need to say to explain the cheap price?

Thick and heavy = cheap. Thin and light and still full-size keyboard and screen = more expensive. 802.11n and Bluetooth, backlit keyboard, ambient light sensor, LED backlighting, DVI out, and most importantly - Mac OS X Leopard, not some Windows Home Premium 32 bit.

Re: what a burn...

My Dell 700m laptop is the size of a small textbook and has everything.
13" is not a fullsize screen and 12.1 can be used for everything just fine. Videos, games, photoshop, word, etc.

Crappy battery life??? My dell 700m orignal lasted almost 8 hours and now a little over 6 hours (2 years later).

substandard sized keyboard???? Um no, I prefer it over a full sized keyboard. Its smaller, but not too small to make it hard to type. Its just as easy to type on this keyboard as a full sized keyboard. I know, I am using it to type this.

Why would you need a backlit keyboard?
I know how to type.

It has vga out, svideo out, sd reader, pcmcia, 2 usb, dvd-rw, firewire, ethernet, and dialup. I have used every feature for business at least once. With the macbook air if I was stuck in a hotel without internet I would be screw. Dialup can still be useful. Also every laptop needs ethernet, there is no arugument to not have ethernet as most hotels do not have wireless in rooms.

The Dell 700m is a 2 year old laptop and kicks the MBA's ass in protability, durability, and utility.

Mac OS X is garbage, have u ever used it before?
The spinning wheel of death and force quites every 5 minutes.

Also thickness is not as important as floor space. The MBA takes up just as much space as a regular Macbook.

It may be "fine" for you, but that is definitely a reason that the 700m is cheaper.
Crappy battery life??? My dell 700m orignal lasted almost 8 hours and now a little over 6 hours (2 years later).
I'm just going by the review you linked to.
substandard sized keyboard???? Um no, I prefer it over a full sized keyboard.
Who cares what you prefer? It's still not a full size keyboard.

Great - it's easy for you to type on. You're not the intended market for the MacBook Air. Don't buy one. There are plenty of subnotebook users who want the 13 inch screen - it's the same size as the MacBook but much lighter and thinner.
It has vga out, svideo out, sd reader, pcmcia, 2 usb, dvd-rw, firewire, ethernet, and dialup. I have used every feature for business at least once.
The MBA is for professionals. They would use none of that stuff.
With the macbook air if I was stuck in a hotel without internet I would be screw.
You mean "screwed." Anyway, no you wouldn't because you would have the USB to ethernet adapter in your pocket.
Dialup can still be useful. Also every laptop needs ethernet, there is no arugument to not have ethernet as most hotels do not have wireless in rooms.
Choose your hotel before leaving then. Or use the USB adapter.
The Dell 700m is a 2 year old laptop and kicks the MBA's ass in protability, durability, and utility.
Hardly. It weighs more than a pound more and is three times as thick. And that's with the smallest battery.
Mac OS X is garbage, have u ever used it before?
The spinning wheel of death and force quites every 5 minutes.
LOL. New to DSLR, are we? Which Mac do you own that you are such an authority on OS X? You heard that myth from some teenage gamer, right?
Also thickness is not as important as floor space. The MBA takes up just as much space as a regular Macbook.
Yes it does. Going to 12.1 inches saves you 1.2 inches diagonally. Do you know the Pythagorean theorem?

a^2 + b^2 = c^2.
c^2 = 1.2
a^2/b^2 = 16/9

Solve for a and b.

Re: what a burn...

Its funny how your not a business person at all.
You must not use a computer for your job.

Business people constantly use their vga for presentations.
Usb ports for wireless transmitters or external mouses since a touchpad is not the best for graphic work.
What if you wanted a usb mouse and had to use a cd???

Business people always use cd/dvds for work and for backup of their computers. I backup with dual layer dvds, it would be expensive to keep buying 9gb usb drives to store backups.

If the macbook is not a subnotebook then the macbook air is not either. They are the same size except the macbook air is thin and lacks every feature people need in a laptop.

Many professionals use pcmcia wireless cards to have an internet connection everywhere. Also pcmcia is almost internal and does not stick out 2 inches like a usb transmitter would which means it takes up even more space.

The macbook air is not geared towards professionals.
Professionals would just be annoyed at all the external crap they have to carry around to get their job done.

Its all about utility and the macbook air is just a crippled macbook.

Re: what a burn...

I am a professional. I go to conferences and present at conferences, take notes at conferences and stay in hotels.

The MacBook Air wouid be perfect for me.

The DVI-out provides all the signals I would need to connect to any projector.

I have never had the need to read or write an optical disk on the road in 20 years. Backing up small documents and presentations is easily done to dot-Mac, and you can use Back To My Mac to get and put files on your home Mac.

Wireless what? It comes with 802.11n.

The only "external crap" I would take with me is an ethernet dongle, a DVI/VGA adapter and a mouse. And carrying 3 lbs back and forth to the conference center sure beats carrying 5 lbs that my MacBook Pro weighs.

If you want to add optical, ethernet, more USB ports, replaceable battery, card slots, blah blah, just get a regular sized laptop.

So you want a 12-inch laptop with substandard-size keyboard, lots of slots and sockets, and an optical drive, 4+ pounds and 1.6 inches thick? Fine.

Why would anybody need to give away a flash drive OR a DVD? Just wirelessly transfer the damn thing to their computer. Unless you're working in the middle of a cornfield or something.
