Shooting For A Cause: The Next Project Themes

The poll is now closed and it looks like we're going to do another set of calendars plus a photobook for National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Now we need to come up with some theme ideas. Just to remind you, our themes last time were:

Earth and Sky
Sunrise Sunset
Flowers
Wildlife

I think it would be best if we didn't just repeat the same themes, but came up with new ones. So get creative! Let's see how many themes we can come up with in the next 2 weeks.

I'll start it out:

On the Road (automobiles, motorcycles, etc)

You guessed what popped into my mind...Art, of course. That can cover a gamut of things I guess which may cloud the issue, but I still throw it into the mix for consideration.

It's elementary...

Earth
Fire
Water
Wind

Needless to say...I've got some fire pictures I'm proud of. I've seen excellent examples of these four themes throughout our galleries here on DSLR.

Not sure if this is what you meant, but I was actually thinking of an Artify calendar. Some of the more creative Artify images (if done on a large enough image) might make for a nice calendar.

I had that thought as well.

My wife suggested something along the lines of Macro - showing the unusualness of stuff really small. the textures we don't normally see, etc... not sure what you'd call it.. but it sounds cool

Re: Shooting For A Cause: The Next Project Themes

I would like to suggest that proper post processing be done on the selected images so that they look better in print.

I think it would also be a great idea to be a bit more selective of the images used. Kind of, like, raise the standard a bit, if I may be so blunt.

I also think it would be worth it to look for a different supplier as I found out Cafe Press products are not exactly world class or anything. Not very good at all, if I should be so honest.

I think this may help more products sell. I know I was not very happy with the one I purchased this last time, but it was, atleast, for a great cause; Which is why I did buy one.

I have seen better shots here in the gallery from many of the people that put shots into the Calendars.

Just a suggestion though.

A different supplier has already been discussed and I found no issues with the images used. If PP becomes mandatory it will exclude lots of folks - myself included and that is not a good thing I don't think.

Well, images for print need to be post processed in a special way for optimum quality. A properly processed image for print can make the difference between a mediocre appearance and an fantastic one.

Most people have no idea how to properly post process images to begin with, especially when post processing them for print; Which is entirely different.

You need to know that what looks good at internet size and viewing or viewing on your computer typically does not look well in print. It is typically far too soft for starters.

I am not sure why anyone would object to having an image properly prepped for printing? That just does not make sense at all. Even a Professionals images get prepped in post for printing. That is just the way it is. Typically prepping only involves sharpening and color correction to the proper printer profile (ICC Profile); As well as setting the sizes and PPI. Anyone who knows anything about printing would know this is a must.

That is why I am not sure why prepping for print is so objectionable, especially by amateurs and snap shooters, when a Professional does not even object to it?

While you may have liked the images used, I did not care for many of them personally. Quite a few would have greatly benefited from proper prepping for print; The rest of the issues were the Printers fault, like, the holes through the images, for example. Some of the faults were due to an obvious lack of original image size or quality for the type of printing as well. Others were too soft or overly (or improperly) sharpened which caused lots of artifacts to show up in the final printed result.

While I may not be much of a Photographer; I do know quite a bit about proper prepping for print and printing as it is what I do.

Nikon guy is correct and one of the downfalls of using a cafepress type shop (similar to webshots, snapfish, etc) is they are "drop-n-print" type production facilities.

To get a truly stunning result we'd have to use a place like Mpix.com or WHCC.com where they provide image prep to ensure optimal print output. The problem is the cost would skyrocket and we'd go broke trying or be left with expensive calendars that aren't selling.. It's a toughie!

But then a lot of folks here don't know how to do what you propose which would mean far fewer submissions. Personally I found no issues with the calendar I got - the images were fantastic.

1- Please register for the site rather than posting anonymously - people will pay much more attention to what you have to say. Shows some level of commitment

2 - Since you appear to be our resident printing professional, maybe you want to offer your services up to Jason to post process all the photos for this years project so that they do come out looking awesome.

Thanks!
