[info] ATT announces DSL price increase March 2008

Just received an email from ATT/Yahoo about a rate increase, see below...

Dear AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Member,

At AT&T, we value your business and strive to provide you with the best possible Internet experience.

We are writing to inform you of a change to the price for your AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet service. In an effort to continue providing you with the high level of quality, service, and features you've come to expect from AT&T, starting with your March 2008 bill, the monthly rate for your AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Express plan which you are currently enrolled in will increase from $19.99 to $25 per month.*

This change will be automatic. There will be no interruption to your Internet service based on this change, and you will continue to enjoy the same great FREE features you currently do today like AT&T Yahoo! Mail Protection with Email Virus Protection and SpamGuard, Pop-up Blocker, Personalized Home Page, up to 10 email accounts with UNLIMITED storage space, and more.

And we're continually making improvements to offer you even more value, more speed, and more ways to stay connected, including NEW features like:
The addition of FREE AT&T Wi-Fi service at 10,000 U.S hot spots on the nation's largest Wi-Fi network.
Upgraded security features — AT&T Yahoo! now includes award-winning Norton AntiVirus™, the world's most trusted anti-virus software† and award-winning Norton™ Personal Firewall, delivering all-in-one protection for your PC.

Increasing prices on DSL? What in the heck are they smoking?

Coincidentally, I was just looking at my phone bill tonight. I keep a landline purely for DSL (has AT&T heard about cellphones with no-additional-cost long distance?), yet I can only get the 1.5Mbit tier. I was just thinking that ~$50 per month for 1.5Mbit service was a pretty poor value...

And they want to add 10% more to that price? I gotta think that 6Mbit cable is in my future ($20/mo promo rate for 6 mos, then $45/mo afterwards)...AT&T contact ends in April.

Is it possible the email was due to your yearly contract running out and the "monthly" fee post contract kicking in?

When I got one of those emails it was due to my yearly contract running out and the monthly fee kicking in.

The current online prices are (in the ballpark):
Basic DSL
$14.99
Pro DSL
$24.99
Elite DSL
$34.9

ATT had gone to the $19.95 Express DSL without any contract a couple years ago. Before then, I used to call them a month before my annual commitment was expiring and sign up for another year and I would get $5 off the old $24.95 DSL Express rate. I just looked up DSL rates on ATT and it states "no commitment" so it doesn't look like anything has changed requiring a contract.
The only thing different with this increase, is I would get free wifi hot spot access included with the DSL express. Most of the ATT hot spots seem to be at McDonalds but some McDonalds I've been at were free open access anyway.

Wonder what's going to happen to Yahoo/ATT with microsoft trying to buy Yahoo? Could be another increase on the horizon if ATT is charged more to use Yahoo service under microsoft management.

There's another blurb out somewhere else here that talks about a $5/month increase except at the elite level. I read that the same day I got the $70/month bill, which last month was 65. That's basic land line and elite and fee/surcharges out the wazzoo.

I guess the pig's lipstick's getting expensive.

I just got the increase letter this past Friday.

I am now on Uverse, will my monthly charge go up as well?

I think the increase is only for those not on Uverse.

Can someone clarify, please?

Thanks,

Steve

I was at Pro, but since the increase puts the price at $30/month, I thought it silly to not go the extra 5 bucks to double the speed. With some help from MrFixitCT, I'm up and running at Elite speeds... so far so good. It's still way cheaper than Metrocast (since I don't have cable, I have DirecTV) and I've had rock solid connection since I started using ATT HSI (knock on wood!) If you can go with Elite, I think it's worth the extra 5 bucks- go for it.

I called today (800-ATT-2020) and the agent told me no joy on doing anything about the increase. When I pointed out to her that Metrocast was offering 34.99/mo - $100 to switch and that made 6MB cheaper than the 3MB, she switched me to a "retention specialist" who agreed to credit $5/mo for one year without having to re-up with a contract. Probably could have negotiated for an additional discount but the 24.99/mo pricepoint works for me.

Re: ATT announces DSL price increase March 2008

Called AT&T & also ended up talking with a "retention specialist"... ended up negotiating an upgrade to "Pro" (3mbps) from my previous "Express" (1.5mbps) speed. So... I still have the $5 increase, but at least I'm getting increased service for the money. Supposedly, this price will be good for the foreseeable future. Definitely suggest you call AT&T to bitch about the increase, and see if you can negotiate some kind of resolution!

In general, though... the AT&T sites are REALLY messed up! Different pricing & service info between AT&T and old SBC pages (AT&T links may bring you there).

Also... though AT&T announced this price increase awhile back, it STILL is not reflected on their website offers & sign-up pages... not even on the upgrade pages. They've made the site "prettier" (the NEW AT&T)... to bad they don't spend any time on CONTENT!

So it goes...

I switched to DSL from Metrocast and got the Elite package also. Solid as a rock.

I'm really sick of these AT&T guys increasing their prices all the time. I also never liked the fact that AT&T and Verizon cooperated in the illegal wiretapping with the Bush administration. I think I'll go to Comcast cable at much faster speeds for the starting price of $19.99 per month for the first 6 months and CREDO for my telephone service. AT&T really sucks! I hope everyone drops them for pulling this price increase and spying on us.

So you chose to go to Comcast instead? You think they are better?
Good luck with that choice.

Really! seems like every 3 months they are throwing another little increase in there... Wish I had an alternative other than satellite.

finally called today to cancel my landline & express dsl. of course my real intention was to avoid the $5 dsl increase with the help of a retention specialist showering me with numerous credits. larry(at&t dude) and i had a friendly, serious discussion about my current service and an online comcast offer for $19.99 dsl with free modem & $100 rebate. this is what i ended up getting:

no dsl price increase for 6 months/$5.00 monthly credit
landline/no service changes/$5.00 month credit no time limit
$20 visa gift card to be mailed
$10 one time immediate account credit.

i retained express service and rep told me i was locked into a 6 month contract. i didn't ask about canceling early and possible fees. my landline credit was quoted as ongoing without ending after 6 months. once received, gift card needs to be activated online. larry's first offer: $5 dsl credit and the $5 landline credit but my landline would be switched to a 'per-call charge' meaning no free local calling. told him that was a strange concept to consider and
unacceptable. he then offered the $5 landline credit with no service changes. i mentioned the comcast rebate(s) & free modem which meant i could get dsl for approx $20 for 6 months. he then said he wanted to help keep as much $$$$ in my pocket as possible & keep me as a customer. then he offered the $20 gift card & $10 one-time account credit. i guess i did ok.

the worst thing an at&t dsl customer can do is nothing! make a call and jump through a few painless hoops and you have a good chance of saving some $$$. good luck.

Absolutely! generally, if you have not changed service in awhile, it pays to see what is available, and not be afraid to call them up.

In my case, AT&T mailed me, and said, "Hey! We think that you may be paying too much (go figure that!), there are better offers that we have now!" in the end, I made a slight overall service change, saved a few bucks (not many, but hey!), and got my service bumped up from Pro to Elite.

Ahh yes, the yearly pricing roulette thread is upon us again. I'm on term ending in March every year. I can report that this year has been the best call yet !
I was just informed today that on the 1st of March I was automatically switched to another year @ 24.99 for Pro.
I don't know how or why but I do know it doesn't get much easier that that ! Thank you ATT

I've had Express for a couple of years at $19.99 per month. I renewed online 02-10-08 for 12 months at the same rate. I got a bill today that shows an increase to $25. I called about it but was told the rate was increased for everyone. Incredible.
