So what's the $5 for?

As a rank and file AT&T employee... I'm hoping the $5 price increase will spurn a wave of new hirings, training, and better stock of replacement equipment.

Somehow I doubt it. We already run our network on the cheap.

1) The techs both in the Central Offices and outside crew don't have spare circuit packs on hand to replace failed equipment.

2) We are running a skeleton crew in the central offices, outside crews, and in the network surveillance centers. We are back-logged hundreds of repair tickets when it comes to inter-office lines (including optical carriers which the FCC is now starting to fine us on).

3) Training is crap. Very few people (if any) know how to diagnose and repair our newer fiber optics equipment (yes that includes the ones used to carry UVerse service... 40 OC192s on one fiber).

Most of us haven't seen a hint of any light at the end of the tunnel...
