Do you mean an entire new OS or just the Service Pack? You'd have to purchase Vista all over again if you meant the former. From what I hear, you cannot slipstream SP1 into Vista so in any case, you cannot do a clean install of SP1 unless you purchase Vista all over again with SP1 integrated. -- 2008 NFC Champions - Giants 23, Packers 20

Well if my Vista dvd gets damaged they will replace it for a small fee. And I will ask them to send me one with SP1 on it
I did the samething with XP. |

Thanks... everyone's picking the Pats but everyone also picked the Cowboys and Packers... I feel pretty good about the G-Men in this one as they're the away team and they already have 10 road wins in a row. GO G-MEN! -- 2008 NFC Champions - Giants 23, Packers 20

As long as it's a Retail Version of Vista, MS will replace it, if it's a OEM/DSP, they will not replace it, you will have to buy one, or order a Vista SP1 CD from MS after SP1 is released. -- Gateway MX6453 * AMD X 2 Duo Core 64 Mobile 1.8GHz * 3GB * 667MHz* DDR2 Memory * Vista Ultimate OEM/DSP |

@guam.net | reply to HenryNettles I read somewhere that one big target is OEM Activation 2.0, which has already tagged some legitimate copies as pirated.
So if I'm running OEM/pre-installed Vista, there is a big chance that my OS will stop working. |

| reply to gate1975mlm I don't have to worry about loosing my installation of Vista Premium because when I bought my Compaq Presario SR5023WM it cam with a 250GB hard witch 8GBs of it is used as a recovery partition. When I first turned it on it gave me the second option of backing up the partition on to separate DVDs as a recovery partition setup. So I have nothing to fear. |

Microsoft said Monday that it has released the first major update for its Windows Vista operating system to manufacturing, meaning the software will be ready for general distribution in the coming weeks.
Vista SP1 will be available in mid-March through Microsoft's online Windows Update service and through the download center on Microsoft.com. »www.pcpro.co.uk/news/162381/driv···k-1.html
Microsoft has announced that Vista Service Pack 1 has been released to manufacturing - but it's being held back from public release until mid-March.
Microsoft claims a series of driver issues is preventing the company from offering the Service Pack for download immediately.
As a result, Microsoft will now tweak Windows Update so that systems running the faulty drivers don't download Service Pack 1. "While we know that most customers who update from Windows Vista to SP1 will NOT be affected, our approach is to improve the experience for all our customers," says Nash.
"To do this, we will begin making SP1 available through Windows Update in mid-March, giving us time to work with some of our hardware partners to make adjustments to the installation process for the affected drivers."
Microsoft will then start delivering SP1 to Vista users running automatic updates in mid-April, but once again, those people with the faulty drivers will miss out. "As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. |

1 edit | reply to HenryNettles Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) was released to manufacturing today and will start being available to customers in March,

Here's the timing for SP1 availability for current Windows Vista users:
* In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on microsoft.com. Customers who visit Windows Update can choose to install Service Pack 1. If Windows Update determines that the system has one of the drivers we know to be problematic, then Windows Update will not offer SP1. Since we know that some customers may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the download center will allow anyone who wants to install SP1 to do so. * In mid-April, we will begin delivering Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. That said, any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. The result is that more and more systems will automatically get SP1, but only when we are confident they will have a good experience. * The remaining languages will RTM in April.

Hopefully this update won't be very problematic since it is geared to primarily 'solve' stability issues that many have experienced thus far.
