| I installed SP1 to a Vista desktop this past Friday. No problems whatsoever.
I used a cmd file that changed the registry to accept updates from the official MS Windows Updates site. After that registry adjustment, I needed two prerequisite smaller updates first (I hear some need 3 updates). Then after those, SP1 showed up and I waited for it d/l. Then I told it to install. No issues. I'm good to go. |

It is NOT a Beta. When it's complete, it most definitely says Service Pack 1. |

I even moved the task bar to make sure nothing was hiding under it. |

Here is a link for info on the registry hack, even though it mentions 'Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2' what you will get is SP1 RTM (KB936330), they are essentialy identical except for name;
»forums.slickdeals.net/showthread···t=729204
As an alternate to the registry hack here is a location that gives instructions for installing Vista SP1 RTM final via download from Microsoft (I think you may have to register to gain access);
»windowsforums.org/?showtopic=154
Note that the KB937287 and KB938371 updates are now being made available via windows update. So after you run Windows update (may have to repeat several times) to ensure the these are installed (and a third update(KB935509) for Ultimate users) you only need to download the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (x86, KB936330), 532.94 MB and script files mentioned. Then after copying/extracting to the C:/VistaSP1 folder run steps 1 and 7 to 10 in the 'Installing' section.

| reply to HenryNettles One nice thing is that you only need to download 1 important update after doing a fresh Vista SP1 install. (Defender definitions). -- Super Bowl XLII Champions - Giants 17, Patriots 14

| reply to howie I uninstalled the last release of SP1 about a month ago. Slow boot, Desktop going black after login, flashing on then going black again before getting a stable desktop etc .... Uninstalled it and all was fine.
So I thought that I would try this version ... same thing. I am wondering if it is really worth it to apply this service pack. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

4 edits | Irish,
I have two machines in SP1 (thanks to Howie) and on one of them I noticed the exact problems you described.
"Slow boot, Desktop going black after login, flashing on then going black again before getting a stable desktop"
I ran JV16 reg cleaner and compactor and the problem is gone.
I did all this last night and tested it several times, but just to make sure I am not leading you down the path... I just fired it up from a cold start and the problem(s) you described are gone. Might be worth a try. Also work/not work would you let me and the others know.
Here's hoping. |

I did a "fresh" Vista install and then immediately applied the Service Pack (standalone). No issues like you're seeing but perhaps HolmanGT 's suggestion may help you. | reply to HolmanGT I used three cleaners that I already had ... no joy. So I paid $20 for JV16, but this was not the program that you used. No joy with that one.
DL the program that you used. I did about 3 or 4 passes on the reg clean. Rebooted and held my breath because it deleted a ton of stuff. Boot time was not much better, but the black screens are gone - Joy.
So it did fix that issue. maybe if I tinker some, I can improve on the boot time.
Thanks. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

2 edits | Irish,
I used the latest version of JV16 2007, just because that was what was installed on that machine.
On this machine I have Jv16 2008, but never had the problem on this one.
That black screen thing on my other machine had me scarred to death. I don't pay to much attention to boot-up time anymore especially since I got rid of NIS and switched to OneCare... I know, I know your going to tell me how crappy it is but my machine boots twice as fast as it did with Norton. Also I would think that SP1 is probably doing a lot of tweaking on the what files should be where thing. So it might get better boot times all by itself with time. (hmmm... sounds like an oxymoron to me, but oh-well).
PS - Now that you have JV16 and oh buy the way the share ware has a thirty day trial so you didn't have to buy it right up front. But while it is just hanging around try a compaction on the registry and see if that helps a little. Just a quick comment on JV16 it backs up everything that it kills so not too much concern there. I know sometimes the amount of stuff that it says is garbage is a little scary but I have never had JV16 Break anything on any of my machines. Well here comes the truth, it did one time Break AutoCad for me, but I just told JV16 to put back all the Autocad stuff it deleted and Autocad and I were both happy 'Again'. |
