I don't recommend it for everyone, though, as re-installing 20GB worth of programs takes a lot of time. It is ironic that the SP1-only install takes 40 minutes or more compared to about 25 when installed along with the OS. Go figure...

Howie: Did you have a problem justifying a whole new install? The service pack probably takes a little longer than the full install (ironic, huh?) but re-customizing your system had to take ions.

Well so far so good. I wouldn't have noticed either of the ones you mention.

Sleep mode: I have such a bad taste in my mouth from previous OS versions that I don't even attempt to use "Sleep Mode" any more.

And the UAC I found so obnoxious that I used TweakUAC early on to put that puppy in what TweakUAC calls quiet mode. What a God send that was. It even received usage recommendations form Microsoft.

The biggest improvements I have seen are that my laptop wakes from sleep mode faster; and if you have UAC control on for security, you get less "ok to proceed" prompts to get a new application installed and running

I used the latest version of JV16 2007, just because that was what was installed on that machine.

On this machine I have Jv16 2008, but never had the problem on this one.

That black screen thing on my other machine had me scarred to death. I don't pay to much attention to boot-up time anymore especially since I got rid of NIS and switched to OneCare... I know, I know your going to tell me how crappy it is but my machine boots twice as fast as it did with Norton. Also I would think that SP1 is probably doing a lot of tweaking on the what files should be where thing. So it might get better boot times all by itself with time. (hmmm... sounds like an oxymoron to me, but oh-well).

PS - Now that you have JV16 and oh buy the way the share ware has a thirty day trial so you didn't have to buy it right up front. But while it is just hanging around try a compaction on the registry and see if that helps a little. Just a quick comment on JV16 it backs up everything that it kills so not too much concern there. I know sometimes the amount of stuff that it says is garbage is a little scary but I have never had JV16 Break anything on any of my machines. DL the program that you used. I did about 3 or 4 passes on the reg clean. Rebooted and held my breath because it deleted a ton of stuff. Boot time was not much better, but the black screens are gone - Joy.

So it did fix that issue. maybe if I tinker some, I can improve on the boot time.

I have two machines in SP1 (thanks to Howie) and on one of them I noticed the exact problems you described.

I ran JV16 reg cleaner and compactor and the problem is gone.

I did all this last night and tested it several times, but just to make sure I am not leading you down the path... I just fired it up from a cold start and the problem(s) you described are gone. Might be worth a try. Also work/not work would you let me and the others know.

Note that the KB937287 and KB938371 updates are now being made available via windows update. So after you run Windows update (may have to repeat several times) to ensure the these are installed (and a third update(KB935509) for Ultimate users) you only need to download the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (x86, KB936330), 532.94 MB and script files mentioned. Then after copying/extracting to the C:/VistaSP1 folder run steps 1 and 7 to 10 in the 'Installing' section.

Microsoft has announced that Vista Service Pack 1 has been released to manufacturing - but it's being held back from public release until mid-March.

Microsoft claims a series of driver issues is preventing the company from offering the Service Pack for download immediately.

I'm confused... Do you mean an entire new OS or just the Service Pack? You'd have to purchase Vista all over again if you meant the former. From what I hear, you cannot slipstream SP1 into Vista so in any case, you cannot do a clean install of SP1 unless you purchase Vista all over again with SP1 integrated.
Well if my Vista dvd gets damaged they will replace it for a small fee. And I will ask them to send me one with SP1 on it :)

I did the samething with XP.
As long as it's a Retail Version of Vista, MS will replace it, if it's a OEM/DSP, they will not replace it, you will have to buy one, or order a Vista SP1 CD from MS after SP1 is released.

After months of speculation, Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) on Monday will release Windows Vista service pack 1 to manufacturing, according to a Friday report in the Malaysian hardware enthusiast blog Tech ARP. OEMs will also receive Windows Vista Service Pack 1 next week, according to the report.
