| Static ip on residential?
I don't remember if I brought this up before..
Is it possible to get a static ip on residential accounts?
I just got one on my DSL account, and it got me to thinking about it over here on my cable connection. -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |

| reply to gatorkram I think you might want to get a business account if you want a static ip,when I was with charter my ip almost never changed, with Suddenlink,I've noticed about 5 changes,I seriously doubt you can get a static ip with suddenlink on residential, but I could be wrong. |

| reply to gatorkram I believe SL will only give out static IP's on a commercial account. They will also not filter any ports on the commercial accounts.
I have a commercial account here as I need a static IP, unfiltered ports, and a need to run a server. However, the speeds on commercial accounts with Suddenlink is pathetic to say the least. This is the biggest complaint I have with them is that since the switch from Cox to SL they have basically abandoned their commercial account business. While they have offered speed upgrades at little to no price increase on the residential side, Suddenlink phone, etc. they have offered nothing new to their commercial accounts. Much different than Cox, where if you had a commercial account you typically had more bandwidth than residential, static IP's, unfiltered ports, etc. Keep in mind you paid out the ... for it, but you did get more.
So if I had the opportunity to switch here to DSL I would in a heart beat! DSL is now in our area, so it's only a matter of time!! |

| Lots of speculation...
Yeah, I miss my cox soho account. I had 5 static ips...
Anyway, I guess I will have to wait for an official answer to come, and then, of course complain if it's a negative response.
ISPs are always looking for easy ways to generate revenue, why not sell static IPs like Embarq does for $5 a month.
Oh, and bring back the soho accounts! -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |

| reply to gatorkram Hi Gatorkram,
I apologize for the delayed response.
You were correct in your train of thought. Suddenlink only offers static IPs to our commercial customers.
I am not sure if we plan on changing that. I will see what I can find out and update this thread once I get the answer. |

| said by Kenrin :i don't see what the big deal is about static IPs, you can get a domain at a place like no-ip or some other site and just have it updated with a program every time it changes I have two ISP connections right now, and at some point I plan to get a router, and set it all up to balance etc. Having two static IPs would make the setup easier, than having to worry about one maybe changing, and having to do it again.
My DSL ISP changed like 3 times in a week, but at least I was able to get static on that side. My cable IP has been the same for longer than I remember.
In this case, it's more, "Hey, in this market, I can get a static IP in the residential market place with Company A, I wonder why Company B isn't doing it as well" -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |

| reply to gatorkram I guess you never got an answer?
It still seems odd to me, if your competitor in the same local market sells a static IP for $5 a month, why you wouldn't want to at least match that offer. -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |

| reply to gatorkram Static IP and unblocked port 80 is only available with a SOHO account. You can (or used to be able to) get these for your home but they cost more for less bandwidth and it's still the same network and hardware, so reliability doesn't really change. It is my understanding that business customers get better phone support but that would be extremely easy to do because the phone support residential customers get now can hardly be called support. Torment would be a better term.

That is what I had on cox, back in the day though. -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |

About the only good thing I can come up with right now, to say about SL, is the 10mbit downstream is decent in this day and age. To bad the upload should be about 2mbit. -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |
